I'm not sure if this is going to make any sense but, I'm going to give it a shot. When someone has gentail herpes are they continually contagious? From what I understand, they are contagious when they are in an outbreak or are experiencing shedding. Does it then stand to reason that if someone knew when they were shedding they would be able to determine a safe period for sex? Is there actually a time when they are not contagious? Thanks for any help with this............

Herpes question

From my understandings as well, a person with genital herpes is contagious during outbreaks. Also people with genital herpes should be responsible enough to know when it's safe for sex.

It's also potentially contagious (though far less so) when there is no sign of an outbreak (blisters or ulcers); virus particles are still being shed.In other words, the best policy is to always use a condom. It doesn't give 100% protection, but it's far better than not using one.

Exactly...couldn't have recommended the use of a condom better myself. When it is time to take the condom off in the future with a long term mate, it is recommended that you alert them of your problem, but I just can't see how a partner would deal with this kind of information and personally, I wouldn't know if I could tell someone. That being the case, you should use your best judgement and make up excuses should sex come up during an outbreak.
