Laptops/notebooks

Wow, if that's all you want one for then just get a labtop. You don't want it for work or serious things so just get a labtop that you think looks nice.

don't bother with a laugh-top unless you really need the portability. I wouldn't have one unledd I needed it for work.I've had several company issued laugh-tops and never been happy with them. They're unstable, the batteries are crap within a year, the pointing interfaces are annoying and the keyboards are too small for my paws.

My work laptop is a Dell Latitude D600 (with a DVD-burner I stole from a D610). It's about 2 years old and runs beautifully on and off AC power. I can type about 75-80 wpm pretty consistently on it, with only a minor increase in error rates.

A laptop is handy if you don't want to use up a lot of space with a CPU box, keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Also, desktop computers tend to have noisy fans (be careful...so do some laptops). It's also a lot easier to drag around a laptop. You're not stuck at a table.A pretty cheap laptop should suit your needs.

In reply to:Also, desktop computers tend to have noisy fans (be careful...so do some laptops).Oh man, you have no idea.On the Dell Latitude C6xx series laptops, I mean WOW. The primary fan sounded like a dremel tool in and of itself. But it also had a chipset fan that was about 1/3 the size, and somehow louder, plus higher-pitched. It was unreal.

Since you don't have any software anyway, have you thought about an Apple Mac laptop? They're more expensive than the chapest Windows laptops, though.

I'd suggest an iBook (I'm a Mac geek), but if you're really into computer gaming, you'd want to go Windows. Same if cost is a huge factor.

o alright, yea cuz ive read about them and stuff like different types of laptops and like reviewers always say that the battery would suck or that the memory would suck...so i was mainly wondering like what would be good...settings i guess to buy a laptop, cuz yea i forgot to mention i wanna dl music too

If you're planning to run Windows, the single most important factor should be the amount of RAM that you can get for any machine you buy. A fast processor is good, plenty of hard drive space is necessary, a decent video card is needed for many modern games but none of them mean a thing if you're losing 90% of your RAM just by starting Windows.
Also, for your 'school crap' you might want to try and find one that comes with MS Office as part of the package. That way you'll be able to create all your documents in a professional looking format that can still be read by 95% of PC users out there although if you can't get MS Office, you can download OpenOffice or one of the old versions of StarOffice which are both free (the new versions of StarOffice are not free).
