i started going on the pill a few months ago mainly to get rid of menstrual cramps. The first period i had on the pill still hurt, more than usual actually, but was lighter. i went to the doctor, they checked me out, guessed that i'd had a cyst that'd ruptured or something of the sort. so i stick to the pill assuming it will get better. the next period is pain free and light, great, i'm psyched. but then i just got it again and it STILL hurts, it's heavier than it's ever been, and i'm still incredibly irritable and chock-full of pms (another symptom that was supposed to decrease with the meds). what is wrong??? the doctor's dont seem to be offering any useful information, and i am so sick of this pain, it's cutting into my life.

Crammmmmps :(

serves you right for just taking the pill to get rid of a pain every woman has to deal with.
-
Java, are you a masochist? I thought it was medically acceptable to use the b/c pill to, among other things, "regulate a woman's menstrual cycles that have been chronically irregular and heavy", and that, in any case, they're being taken under a doctor's supervision.Different people react differently to the pill, and some women suffer untoward side effects. billyliar, are you saying that your doctors have been unable to help you with your menstrual cramps? (Versus their not being able to explain the failure of the pill to help.)I'd recommend a Google search of "menstrual cramps" or dysmenorrhea.

I think its ok if your going to stop ovulation or if your periods are buckets and buckets a month, but if your having cramps i think you should grin and bear it like everyone else lol
-
i dont agree with you java. there's nothing wrong with trying to get rid of cramps. some women get it worse than others. hers were perhaps more severe and it could be close to impossible to "grin and bare it." i mean come on, why wouldn't you want to get rid of pain if you had the option. i'm sure you take tylenol... why not just "grin and bare" your headache like peopel have to in other parts of the world where medication isn't available?

I do have incredbly horrible unbearable cramps, believe me. I had to go to the doctors cause of the surverity of it, however I think this poster should look for other (Prescription) or just advil to relieve herself of the pain. I dont think using Birthcontrol to stop cramps its the right idea.

Also search on menstrual cramp relief. I don't know whether b/c pills are useful for treating menstrual cramps, but there some info here from the FDA (the article is a bit old), and Medline says this:
In reply to:
Ibuprofen and naproxen sodium are common over-the-counter medications that can help relieve menstrual cramps. A heating pad or hot water bottle may also make you feel better. Other measures to reduce or prevent cramps include:
* Walk or exercise regularly, including pelvic rocking exercises.
* Follow a diet rich in complex carbohydrates, like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables -- but low in salt, sugar, alcohol, and caffeine.
* Practice relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga.Update Date: 6/13/2004

Exactly, before this post i didnt even know birth control pills reduced cramps, only made your periods more regular

look, i understand many many people get cramps. the DOCTORS suggested i go on birth control, not me, because the pain was interfering with my lifestyle. YES, others who have unbearable cramps will tell you the same thing, and if they choose to "grin and bear it" that's their choice. i HAD a different prescription before the pill but it just made me dizzy and nauseous and struck me with just about every side effect it had to offer, so the docs switched me to birth control because its filled with hormones that can regulate a period as well as reduce pain, which was the main issue. i was just looking for advice for others who experienced the same thing, so if you don't know what i'm talking about, you can't offer too much advice eh?and in response to what the doctors cant do, they've tried to medications and so far both have failed, AND they haven't done the best job at explaining WHAT exactly is failing.

oh and steveA thanks for the info

> they haven't done the best job at explaining WHAT exactly is failing.
This is a big problem that a lot of doctors have. In my opinion, they are obligated to explain the what and why of their treatment. I think you'll be much happier with a doctor who will take the time and effort to explain things, if that's an option. But in any case, you need to do your own research, so you can communicate with the doctor more on his level.

My cramps use to be unbearible! I have a very high pain tolerance and the cramps I'd get were enough to keep me from going to school, and quite often put me in the hospital. I would not only be very ill with them(nausea, vimiting, major back pain...) I would faint or black out because of it. The doctors have yet to find the reason why. They put my on the pill and not only did it relieve alot of the pain I got with my period, but as everyone knows... they got lighter! Some people cannot "grin and bear it". Some people get them too severe!
