I have a bit of a problem. I start college on the 29th and I will be taking 12 credit hours this semester. I also currently work an average of 40 hours a week and just took a raise in pay and a new position with more responsibilities. I don't want to continue to work there, I mean I have a good situation but I'd rather devote my time to academics than a job that really won't mean shit to me in 2 years. It's not like I want to continue my future there but I feel when I took the position and higher wage I was expected to stay around for a while, I think it would be rude to just quit and make my boss work harder until they find and train someone else. Also I think not having a job would have other perks, for one I'd have more time for social activity, presently my nights and weekends are spent working. And I'd have not as much cash to waste on drugs, so I'd cut down a bit on the pot and blow. I don't know what to do, in the long run this is just a dead-end job but I did make a committment to it.

If you are serious about ur education, then any job that you will get later, will be MUCH better than this one, if it is indeed a deadend job. Can you take shifts? Cuz if you can take a couple a week. That will give you enough money for some socialization, and leave some time for relaxing. Either way, try to prioritize - what is more important to YOU right now? And do society a favor, don't spend ur money on drugs, its just idiotic.
-
I can't take any less than 32 bours, and I just don't want two major responsibilities in my life. And I just think that less money will prevent me from buying dope so in return I'll be clean more often. How could I go about quitting? I mean they'll be majorly pissed.
-
Starting college is something that any reasonable employer will accept as a very good reason for quitting. If you're studying full-time, you shouldn't be working more than 20 hours a week and preferably less, or your studies are going to suffer. So just write a letter that you're starting college and you intend to take your studies seriously, and therefore you regret that you'll have to resign as of (date).Replacing you is their problem - you can't stay there forever just because it would be inconvenient for them if you left.
-
I think I'll work there like another week or two, just long enough to get cash to pay off my bills.
-
sounds like a plan!
-
You shouldn't feel bad (at all) about quitting, but I asume you'll give them some notice before leaving.
-
I forgot to mention notice. Generally you should give at least a pay-period notice (i.e. if you're paid weekly, give a week's notice), and it's polite to give as much notice as you can.
-
I agree with the others. School is definitely more important. Get your education, work will come later.
-
I know how ya feel. I am taking 12 credit hours and I am working 30 hours. DO what is best for school.
-
Yeah, I'm just not the kind of worker who just accepts a position where I'm counted upon and then splits. I think I'll tell them that I can stay long enough to show whoever replaces me how to do their job but I don't know who they have there who knows enough yet, most of the people are quite new compared to me, I also feel bad since I'm there to lighten the work load for the manager and me leaving makes his day harder. Even if I gave 2 weeks they'd be pretty pissed but life would go on.
-
Two weeks is pretty much the standard notice time for most jobs. If they can't get their act together in two weeks, they have a problem. If you feel you have to work beyond that, reduce your hours.
-
i told them yesterday, my boss is a high school drop out so he doesnt give a f about higher education and was all pissed off. i just hope i get fired or something before 2 weeks because i really dont want to work that much longer but i told them 2 weeks
-
His ignorance is not your problem. Don't worry about it.
-
yeah i still just feel i made a committment but i will just slack off till i am done or terminated, its not like i need this job for a reference
-
Slacking off is the worst option. You never know when a reference will be useful.
-
hardly anyone checks refs. anyways, any job i ever worked at never had. besides this is the last shit job ill ever work. im just not going to show up again after today, i hate the customers theyre complete douchebags, society has some idea that people who work at jobs like that are punching bags for them. i work next on fri. but i just wont come in, and ill keep my phone turned off so i dont have to deal with it, i conviently worked just till the end of the pay period, today so i dont have to go and face them to pick up my check after being a no-call/no-show. i even threw my uniform out my car window today on the highway so i cant go in even if i wanted to.

Yes, consistency is a good trait in a worker.
-
well shit, i just cant take it anymore. i never called off once, i was always on time, did everything there, im too exhausted now and im not going to stay there until they find someone else, that could take months. I just say fuck it, its my life

All you have to do is say, "I'm out of here in two weeks", and at the end of the last day of the second week, turn in your uniform. They should have your final paycheck ready; you shake hands, wish each other good luck, and say goodbye. The gold watch is optional.
