America was also late in the game in banning slavery, allowing women to vote, and letting blacks use "white" toilets and water fountains.
It's always amusing when Americans, especially academics, explain why things are the way they are in the U.S., as if they're universal truths. Why a woman would not make a good leader. Why it would be bad for blacks to sit at a white lunch counter or in the front of a bus. Why a single-payer (socialized) health care system couldn't possibly function. All this while those things are happening very successfully in other parts of the world.
