Web master, what is with all the POP UPS? Come on. This is ridiculous.

POP UPS!
-
Amen !I'm really getting tired of that frigging ringtone one!And yes.....I've enabeled my pop up blocker and restricted my website security level to high before some wise crack throws that solution at me...
-
I use Firefox and Norton Internet Security (legal notice: this is not an endoresement), on XP. It's all plain vanilla stuff. My computer has been on a very large number of networks. I get no pop-ups from this site or any other that I've been to. I have pop-ups and ads blocked. I have Javascript enabled, with some of its window-hijacking features disabled. It's been said many times that if you disable Javascript, you will not get pop-ups. That's a sledgehammer approach, and causes some useful things not to work, but it will solve your problem. And you can always turn it back on whenever you want. Instructions can be found in one of the sticky threads.

I had the same issue as you Roc and than I was given these directions and ever since than I've had zero pop ups. Maybe give it a try if you have't yet.Heres the link to the thread:http://www.afraidtoask.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB16&Number=223861&page=1&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

Here's the No more pop-ups! sticky thread, in case you're not using IE.
-
When will you accept that what you do Steve doesn't work for everyone? Just because it works for you doesn't mean it works for everyone... I've done what you said many times and still got popups.I just disable Javascript when I'm on this site ... and enable it again once I'm off. That's the only thing that works for me.
-
You have turned off Javascript and you're still getting pop-ups? I don't think so.There's nothing at all magic about my set-up. If you're using the current versions of Firefox and NIS and set it up the way I did, and if you're running XP, you will get no pop-ups. There are many other setups, some of which are surely superior to mine, that will also not get pop-ups.As I said, turning off Javascript will also eliminate pop-ups, but you'll also lose some useful Javascript functionality. But you can always turn it on again when you're done with this infested site. You can periodically get NIS for free (after rebates) when the new version is within a few months of coming out. There might be more efficient solutions, but that's what works for me.
-
Ok, maybe I wasn't clearo n what I said, but I meant tos ay that the only thing that works for me is turning off Javascript ... doing what you said on the other thread doesn't work> As I said, turning off Javascript will also eliminate pop-ups, but you'll also lose some useful Javascript functionality. But you can always turn it on again when you're done with this infested site.Yeah, that's what I mean with my last sentence of my last post ... I turn off JavaScript when I come to this site, and when I leave I turn it on again

Are you using XP/NIS/Firefox? If so, it's a mystery...maybe we can figure out what's going on. I'm pretty familiar with those things. If you're using McAfee, for instance, I can't offer much help.
-
I have XP and firefox.. I dunno what NIS is but I have Norton
-
NIS = Norton Internet Security??
-
In a post I accidentally forgot to put up, I said:In reply to:Do you have Norton Antivirus? I'm talking about Norton Internet Security, which contains Norton Antivirus and a firewall. The firewall is the key thing that keeps my laptop clean when I roam around with it. I got the latest NIS free after rebates a couple of months ago....they usually do that when the next version is withing a few months of coming out, and people stop buying upgrades. You can still get it very cheaply.Things I mentioned for customizing Javascript keeps a rogue Web site like this one from taking over and resizing and moving around your open browser windows. Somehow in the copying and recopying, I lost one imporant thing in setting up Firefox, which is to set it to block pop-ups.sdp, could you change this paragraph in the sticky thread...In reply to:Go to tools -> options, then in the left margin click on Web Features. At the bottom of the list there will be a box to Enable Javascript. To just disable Javascript, uncheck that box....to this?...In reply to:Under tools --> options --> web features, check "Block Popup Windows" (I had to list one site as an exception). At the bottom of the list there will be a box to Enable Javascript. To just disable Javascript, uncheck that box.

I'm nto sure but I think it's just Norton AntiVirus ... so I guess I don't have NIS
-
You need to make sure the "no pop-ups" box is checked in the appropriate place in Firefox. You also need to have a firewall on your PC, like NIS, McAfee's, Zonealarm, or one of the many others.
If you actually did have my setup, you wouldn't have any pop-ups on this site. If you want to make it simple, do a Web search for Norton Internet Security. I got the 2005 version a couple of months ago, and it was free after rebates (minus the cost of two postage stamps). I got the 2004 version at Costco last year, and with the addition of Costco's rebate, even after sales tax, I came out a few dollars ahead.
-
I have that box checked .. and I have ZoneAlarm ... in the About thing for ZoneAlarm it says:ZoneAlarm version:5.5.062.011TrueVector version:5.5.062.011Driver version:5.5.062.011I'm guessing that's the newest version ...
-
NIS has specific settings to block pop-ups and adware. Does ZoneAlarm have it?
A long time ago I used ZoneAlarm as a simple firewall, and it worked great (in fact, I think Norton kind of copied their technique), but it was _just_ a firewall...it didn't have any other functionality, like pop-up blocking. I don't know about the recent versions.
Anyone else out ther know much about ZoneAlarm? -
I dunno ... I have ZoneAlarm set to "Internet Zone Security: High" and Truted Zone Security is set to high, too
-
Yeah, that's firewall stuff, which is great for keeping hackers out of your system, but I don't think it helps for things like pop-ups, adware, etc.You might want to look into a separate pop-up blocker. I don't know which ones are good, but I'm pretty sure you can download one for free.
-
I thought I had google toolbar which has a popupblocker at some point ... dunno what happened to thatAnd I don't feel like downloading something new ... i'll just disable JavaScript ... seems easier to me
-
i'll just disable JavaScriptThat'll work.I may be wrong, but I thought the Google pop-up blocker was for IE. In any case, Firefox has a built in pop-up blocker, but it's not perfect.
