Hello, I am 21 years old and have an external hemorrhoid. I've never had one before. I believe myself to be a healthy individual and exercise 2-3 times a week (sometimes more). It developed last Sunday and I didn't know it was there until I used the restroom. It has caused me no problems it doesn't hurt, and very rarely itches (when it does it's only for a few seconds. It's about the size of a pea and I have no idea how I got it. Anyways, I have been eating a high fiber diet ever since, and try to put as little strain on it as possible but now 6 days later it seems to be the same size. I'm worried because I have read a lot of articles stating that the swelling would go down significantly within 2-3 days. So my question is (and I would love to be informed of your experiences with an external hemorrhoid) how long does it take to go away? When the swelling goes down how long does it take hour, day, week? Do some hemorrhoids never return to their original state? Thanks for your time.

My experience is that they go down in a few days. Have you tried using Preparation H or one of the other haemorrhoid creams?

I would recommend the hemmoroid cream as well. This from experience. Yes the swelling should go down in 2 or 3 days. Sometimes it takes longer. Also, just so you know. It may never go away completely. I started having hemmoriods at about 19. I wasn't sure what the thing sticking out of my butt was and was so worried I asked my Dad. He took a look and just said, well welcome the adulthood. Seems most folks in my family have a problem with hemmoroids. So, lucky me.All the things you are doing should help. Yes, hard stools irritate them. Also, for me if I get diarreah it irritates them as well. Also, you can use Tucks wipes they will help reduce the swelling. Or you can just get a bottle of witch hazel (that's what is in Tucks). It will help the swelling go down quicker and is supposed to toughen the skin up some so the hemmoriods aren't irritated as much.
