I was wondering how much of an exercise muscle-wise one gets from riding a bike. I assume it will be more endurance than muscle-gain, but what about training bikes that you can increase the resistance on? Will those help your leg muscles?

Bicycling

If you really want to get a good workout for your legs, put it on a low gear (harder to pedal) and if you have local bike trails that means alot of going uphill, turnign etc..

yes, bicycling is a great muscle building exercise, calves, thighs and buttocks, and it's great for endurance and cardiovascular

I actually like running more, (just because I love the feeling of running) but the excellent thing about biking riding, is you burn about 300-400 calories in 30 minutes (assuming your an average weight person) and you really put a heavier work out on your butt and thighs (not to mention the blood flow to your thighs is unbelievable). If you really want to kick the resistance up, try a stationary bike that you can control how much resistance, our just shoot for strength training on your legs and thighs.

That's what I'm using. I'm thinking of using it for about 11 minutes each day at the highest resistance, going a little over 2.5 miles. And I'm underweight, with a bony butt >.> So my glutes getting a workout would be nice.A little off topic, but what are the exercises that you can do for the muscles on your shins? I know there's the weights that you can put on a little contraption so that you lift your feet up to train them, but is there anything else?

Running and stretching works fairly well for your calves, but calves are one of the most difficult muscles to work. Probably calve raises and things like that. Are you going for stronger endurance or strictly muscle?

I'm going mainly for some extra muscle, but my legs aren't as skinny in comparison to my upper body, in my opinion. But I want to know exercises for the muscles opposite to the calves. The muscles on the front of the shin.

there really is only one exercise you need to do to bulk up. It affects pretty much te entire body, its one of the most hated ones to endure, and one of the basics of anyone trying to gain mass. The squat. The squat will do more good for your over all body, concentrating on the legs and thighs and ass and back than any other exercise. The deeper you go the more of a bastard it is and the more youll hate it. I do alot of mountain biking in the summers, just about time to get back on my bike come to think of it. My legs, my ass, my shins hurt like a bastard just looking at some of the trails I rode last year. Biking is a cardio and a real muscle builder depending on what terrain you ride. I use the right gear for what Im riding to make it easier on myself, I still get one hell of a work out.Riding on trails in the woods and up and down hillsides is so much better than sitting on a stationary. Im out in the air in the sun, your stuck in a room looking at 4 walls and a fucking door.I couldt motivate myself to do that but when I get ready to go for a ride, I never look at it as a work out, I always see it as fun adn recreation. Some trails are 2 miles and some are 30 depending on what I have time for and if I can make a weekend out of it and carry a sleeping bag and dinner and breakfast with me or not. I can go along ways with a hammock, a daypack with some freeze dried food, a water purifier and a small pot to boil water in and some plastic silverware. Fuck clothes, strap the sleeping bag on the bike in a waterproof container across te handbars and toss on a backpack, wear a sweat suit with shorts under it and some sun glasses and good shoes and a pump mounted tothe frame as well as a water bottle or 3 and a flat repair kit, get out of town and off the road and it doesnt even feel like a work out as much as a break.
