About 3 1/2 years ago I had an emergency appendectomy. well last night when I was out with Adam and some friends at the local club and was dancing it really started to hurt. I mean it literally felt like they took the scalpel and recut the wound. I about double over in pain. I could understand if I never worked out and could simply say it's because the stomach muscles are weak there. But I work out almost everyday and esp work out my stomach alittle extra hard.Any ideas what could of happened? With the wound being so old now there's no way I could have ripped the incision any is there? It hurts a little today as well but not as bad as last night when it first happened.Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Incision Hurts

I'd be concerned about a hernia or an abscess.

:open_mouth: wow steve! I was actually going to post that... but then thought I'd probably be wrong and didn't want to look stupid again

Well, okay I know I am probably going to sound stupid, but can an incision that is 3 1/2 years old still abcess? BTW not saying your wrong I'm genuinely curious.

It may not be likely, but it's possible. There are probably still stitches in there, and maybe a sponge if the surgeoen wasn't careful (just kidding...I doubt that). Are you having any symptoms of an infection, such as fever? A blood test (WBC, etc.) can clue you w.r.t. an infection. But something herniating (i.e., pushing through the muscle) is also a possibility. When you cut through the abdomen, you weaken the muscles in the abdominal wall. It's certainly a risk in major bowel surgery; I'm not sure how much of a risk it is in an appendectomy.A third possibility is that something is going on that has nothing to do with the appendectomy. It may be just coincidental. In any case, if you're still in pain, you really need to contact your doctor this morning.Did you have laparascopic surgery? I'm not sure how easy that would be if your appendix was in very bad shape. If you're very fortunate, you had your surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, which is one of the best places there is for abdominal surgery, especially laparscopic surgery. I presume you're not that close to Cleveland, though.

the world suddenly seems such a better place.............

Well this morning it feels better than the last two days. Keeping my fingers crosse dit was nothing but I have a follow up appointment anyways this week with my GP go my IBS, so I'll say something than.>Did you have laparascopic surgery? Yuppers I did. The Surgeon actually gave me the option, which I was surprised since I was rushed into surgery. I had the surgery at Mercy Medical Center, which is actually a really good hospital as well. Though Cleveland Clinic would have been my first choice but Cleveland is about an hour and a half away and when you have appendicitis, it's not something you want to travel with LoL.>Are you having any symptoms of an infection, such as fever? Actually that night I woke up in the middle of the night and vomited. But not sure if it had to do with this topic or if I was having a Claustraphobic attack, which happens if I feel closed in. Since we have been renovating the master bedroom we are sleeping in the spare room which is much smaller and I'm against the wall with mountains of stuff from the master bedroom around the bed.And thanks for the info.

Oooo, come to The Clinic...I work there! I can take care of ALL your needs. We are more known for being #1 in Cardiology (my department) though.

You know, when you posted to the Terry Schiavo thread about the nearly ideal care that coma patients get (which happens hardly anywhere in the U.S., in reality), I thought, "Does she work for the Cleveland Clinic or something?", since I knew you were from the area. Now I know.I know two GI surgeons in Boston (at Lahey Clinic and Brigham & Woman's Hospital) who trained at the CLeveland Clinic. The Lahey guy is a laparascopic surgery specialist, and he frequently lectures on the subject. If I keeled over, I'd like to be near a place like the Cleveland Clinic. It's one of the top hospitals in the world.
