Forum idea?

I'm totally serious. I'm just trying to understand what's going on."Go fuck yourself" doesn't mean "go kill yourself". I'm asking, given all he's said, and the angry persona/act/whatever that we always see here, what's the story?
-
Maybe there is something that makes me want to liveThat's what I'm trying to figure out. You frequently talk about wanting to kill yourself, but you keep not doing it. Do you live to one-up other people? If so, that's fine. I'm just wondering.I don't think you're that dumb. What makes you want to live?

Well, it all began when he was a young lad. His best friend was a large stick, he would bring it everywhere with him, the playground, school... One day he was at a birthday party and he saw a trampoline. He jumped and jumped, his stick in his hand, having the time of his life. But he bounced one too many bounces and dropped the poor stick. He soared into the air while the stick fell to the canopy. As he looked on in horror, gravity took hold and he began to drop again, but the stick was fired back up. Well, he never saw the stick again, nor has he been able to cope with everyone laughing at how he walks funny. Very sad really.
-
Bob, you don't know the story.
-
No I don't, nor do I care really. Since he would never tell me I refuse to accept "he has a bad history" as an excuse to be a dickhead 24/7.

Now, think of what this thread was about, and how its ended up. ironic

It's the way humans who don't really know each other behave on an anonymous message board. Flame wars have been going on since the early days of Usenet (which was the collection of Internet "message boards", or news groups, from prehistoric times, before the Web existed). However, there were moderated news groups, where, for no salary, someone would screen each posting, and decide whether it should be posted. Often, each post was annotated by the moderator. But that was a different time and place.
Think of the way people drive, when they think they're anonymous. Their car "levels" them with everyone else. An anonymous public forum, to some extent, does the same thing. Or at least, it changes the equation.

I know you are but what am I!?!?

"Well, it all began when he was a young lad. His best friend..."......

In reply to: Now, think of what this thread was about, and how its ended up. ironic exactly. In reply to: It's the way humans who don't really know each other behave on an anonymous message board no it's how this anonymous message board works, not alli wish people here were more constructive. people just want to pull other people down? look at this thread
-
i wish people here were more constructiveA lot of what people say and do is unproductive. It's hard to get around that fact without intense moderating (i.e., vetting each post), and a lot of editing.> no it's how this anonymous message board works, not allShow me one that covers the topics of, and has the audience that this one does. I've seen message boards that cover narrow technical topics, used by a pretty small community, where things were very harmonious, and even then, things would flare up occasionally. If you can point us to an example of how it's done right, it would be helpful.

woah HelmsmaN, that was way over the top dude!Let's try to keep things civilised around here for cryin out loud.

> lets all not forget this post.
I can't argue with that. The problem is, no matter what the rules are, the less moderator involvement (in the policing sense), the more things tend to go off the rails. I understand trying to strike a balance between free expression and and keeping the forum in a straight jacket, and that no one wants to inspect each post and decide how appropriate it is. It's a tough balancing act. I don't know what the answer is.
But sometimes people come with serious issues, and they're very angy. They lash out. People should be allowed some lattitude, which you give, which I agree with. People generally aren't discussing quilting patterns here. There are people with serious issues, like abusive relationships. The resulting discussion is not always neat and tidy. But then, how much should one persons' difficulties be allowed to impact everyone else? Like a I said, it's a difficult balancing act.
