If someone offered you 100 thousand dollars at 85% tax free to spend a year in Iraq would you take it?I was laid off recently and today I got a job from a woman representing a KBR company, a Haliburton company.I was offered a job for the amount of about 100 k a year with vacation and benifits, truips home once in a while shit like that. To boot is that its 85% tax free because it would be earned overseas. I know people in IRaq and they get shelled and shot at daily, no not troops, civilians in Ammo Surviellence (my last job)This job is in Enviromental techinical operations.A job Im well qualified for and helf in the past. The risk is shit, but its good money and Iv always been one for taking risks. Im not single anymore though and have kids.besides that, its working for a company I belive to be bastards, for a president I relate to a chimp and an ass and an idiot. Its all in support of a war that I think we should never of been involved in.so in a similar situation, how many of you would take that job?
-
Money and LIfe
-
Ah touch situation mate, I would weight the pro's and cons. There are lots of jobs out there for 100k a year, maybe this isn't the right one for you.
-
You mean KRB? No, no, NO!
-
I did mean that! sorry bad typo KBeR is a radio station I isten to here alot sorry my fuck up.I see the NO NO NO NO but why why why why?
-
If you want to do it, do it for the adventure, not the money. Otherwise, it will suck to be there. The money is not that great. There are also nasty diseases to catch, even if you have all your vaccines, and even if those vaccines don't make you sick or cause permanent damage. The security situation gets worse every week. Are we going to have to go there to rescue you? How will we re-attach your nuts? And most of all, you're willing to be away from your kids for months at a time, just for money? WTF is up with that?
-
I'm only considering it. I havent even talked to my kids or fiance about it yet. They called me and offered me the job I didnt apply. I have friends there now (military and civilian) I know its a shit hole and I know the risks.
I assume though since you know who KRB is that you knew somethign specific about them?
as to leaving for money its not something I really want to do. I could get alot of my debt settled for what Id make over what I normally make.
Im almost certain that I wont take it actually and thats before I talk to my family about it. When I was first offered it it was certain Id say yes I mean 100k after tax is hard to turn down for a year of duty. The more Iv thought about it in the 4 hours or so since they called me and offered me the position the more Iv moved closer to decided that I CANT take the job.
I am looking for a job though, Im great with explosives and radiation and solid and liquid haz waste, any one here need someone with those skills and a certified heavy equipment operator as well (If it blows black smoke I can run it)
since someone will ask eventually,
how did they find me if I didnt apply?
easy, I did post my resume on Monster.com and thats what they listed as thier source when they contacted me. -
Kellog Root and Brown, the Haliburton subsidiary, is robbing the federal government blind with their no-bid contracts (that's the government's fault; it's willingly being taken to the cleaners) and other shenanigans. I think it would be as unethical to work for them as it would be to work for the Mafia, even if you're job didn't literally involve killing people and breaking legs.Speaking of big government projects, you should have been in Boston for the $14 billion (and counting) Big Dig project. The heavy equipment went on for miles and miles, and years and years.
-
I knew it was a division of Halliburton, I just didnt know how they were related. Its my conflicts with them as well as not wanting to leave my family for 12 months plus 2 weeks in Texas (Houston) for training and inoculations before leaving. As to basic morals, I wouldnt have a problem working for the Mafia directly or indirectly for the right price. In the right field of course.Iwish to hell I was in Boston for that project, thats someplace I want to atleast visit I havent been yet. I do got some shit going that may lead me to New Orleans for that clean up, but I havent heard anythig solid from any of those companys yet.The more I think on it the more I realize I cant take the job in Iraq but its damned tempting to take the money and run. Of course, I may not live long enough to cash that first check either.
-
New Orleans for that clean upThat's an interesting idea. There have been a lot of tall condos going up in the Miami area, but most of the heavy equipment stuff is done before building begins, unless you're a crane operator. At this point, I don't know if any more big projects will start any time soon.
-
well Florida does hold some attraction for me, especially as the snow begins to fall here in utah (you can only ski so much) Always wanted to take off for a couple of weeks intothe everglades. and yeah I can run a crane, can and have.New Olreans sounds good too, atleast for a while, check it out for a bit year or two maybe. Right now Im lookig heavily into jobs in the puget sound area or around Seattle or Portland. Atleast all of those I could move my family with me after a month or so of being there on my own.
-
Seattle or PortlandTwo great places. Houses sure have gotten more expensive there, though. I don't know what it's like in the suburban areas. You seem crazy enough to fit right in in Florida. Don't forget your gun.
-
I have many guns rifles and pistols.Think my concealed carry permit would hold up in Florida being issued in Utah? and is a .357 Magnum ok to carry there or will I need ot bring something bigger?Harder to conceal there since Ill never need a coat, maybe I better go get a new one with a shorter barrel
-
I'm not sure that you need a license to stuff a gun into your underpants elastic in this state.I took this photo at a bank in South Miami, Florida... You can see my very own reflection in the window.
-
I see those signs all over here in utah.Utah has an open carry law that states you can openly carry a gun or you can pay the fee to the state and carry it concealed.I paid th fee because it makes less people stare at me when I walk into the mall.Course on the down side of carring a loaded fire arm around Im always tempted to pull it out and strike some clerk across the forhead with the barrel when they they give me the wrong order at the drive thru window.
-
Im always tempted to pull it out and...Down here, people indulge their temptations. That's why you don't give someone the finger for cutting you off on the highway.
-
you got curly hair stevie?
-
Thats why I prolly would be dead there but continue to grow older here.
Here 80% of the time some ass hole cuts me off and I flip him off he yells shit and pulls over I pull over and get out and the bastard speeds away.
Iv gotten lucky, most people I run into back off once they find out your really willing to fight and are not just talking shit. Course other times Iv fought people I should of not and had my ass beat
