ppl with add have problems concentrating on a set topic..i know i am on meds for that. and it's extremly offensive when ppl such as the first poster says stuff like this >_> grow up
-
I dont think its real, but thats just me. To me it seems like doctors, (shrinks and medical) are comming out with to many drugs. When i was a kid i had short attention spans on chemistry...do i have add? no. Did i get hyper a lot? Hell yes, I was a kid. Did i have adhd? No. Behaivor problems are linked to mothers drinking (just a little, im not talking about fetal alcohol syndrome) and so now you have people taking their misbehaiving kids to doctors and spending good hard earned money on drugging their kids out. It think its a little...suspicious on how this is such a new growing problem, cause if you look back when my parents were kids (70's and 60's) Kids in their neighborhood didn't have it like they do now. (yes, I discussed this with them). Their is also a small corelation with both parents working now, and kids not having that one parent always home with them giving them attention. Don't get me wrong, I do not intend on having kids, i plan on traveling and having a career, but if a mistake happens and i have a kid (and im incapable of abortion or adoption) And that kid happens to have behaivoral im not drugging him/her out.
Alright, Come on now start picking apart my post.

What you say has a lot of merit. The problem is that "hyperactivity" is not like a broke bone. It's not so clear-cut. There are kids who are clearly out of control, and there are kids who are just normal kids, but who have parents who think their kids need to be catatonic, and there's everything in between. One problem with being truly hyperactive is socialization. Bouncing off the walls uncontrollably can be a very isolating experience. It's hard to have friends, and it's hard to do anything in school, besides physical education.I agree that people jump to the drug solution far to easily, but in some cases, there is no clear, effective alternative.

Wow, you really need to educate yourself on this topic before you give your opinion.
My son has ADHD. It is more than a hyper problem. It is a big problem when it comes to focusing. Doctors did a whole lot of testing on my son. Kind of like the yearly testing schools give.
For example, they asked my son "What is an island?" (he just turned 9 BTW) His answer: "It's water, trees, sand and dirt." The correct answer should be: Sand, trees, and dirt surrounded by water. Another example, "How are a shirt and a hat related?" His answer: "You can put them on." Now, his answers are not wrong, but they are not totally correct either. This is how an ADD/ADHD mind thinks. Also, the testing was a 2 hour phase two days a week for a few weeks. One hour into the testing he starts the figgeting, and the looking around. Yes, young kids get bored and anxious. But imagine how a 6 hour school day feels to a kid with ADHD.
My son is not stupid. In fact he is almost always on the Merit Roll. Which is a B average. Even before the medicatins he was on the Merit Roll. But let me tell you, we struggled for those grades. A homework assignment that should take 1 hour, would take us 2 1/2. It was alot of explaining over and over again. Then to have my 6,7,8 year old son tell me he doesn't know what is wrong with him. And that he thinks his brain just doesn't work. It is heartbreaking.
And just so you know, my son is very polite. He doesn't misbehave or talk back. All his teachers (before the meds) would say, he is a great kid and very helpful, he just cannot pay attention or cannot follow directions.
You have no idea what it is like to be the mother who struggles with the decision to medicate or not. I cried all the time, and went back and forth in my head. I really hated the thought of medication. Now, I am really happy with my choice. He can do a book report on his own. If I tell him to make his bed, he actually does it instead of getting sidetracked by the GI Joe guy laying on the floor on his way to his room.
It is really sad that parents like me feel guilty because of people like you who have no clue what your talking about, and someone who is not even a mother. I would never do anything to harm my children. -
Did I say all? No. Im talking in the many many cases where parents dont feel like doing their parenting and just drugging out their kids. I Personally know a lot who have no issues what so ever but are on drugs. Don't tell me i havent done my research cause i have, We did A LOT of research in my Child psychology class. Im talking statistics and inductive reasonings.

When did I say that you said 'All'?You said you did not believe ADHD is real. (which is fine if that is your opinion) But then proceeded to say how in the 60's and 70's this was not an issue, and how some behavior problems are linked to drinking mothers. They did not know alot about ADHD back then. Those kids were just thought to be 'bad seed' kids. This is why they say if you have a child that is ADHD, there is a 70 something percent chance that one of the parents is ADHD also. My sons father had ADHD also. I'm sorry, I cannot give a link to where I got that percentage, but I have it in a short booklet that was given to me by the psychologist.I stand by what I said about you needing to do some research. Do not tell me that you have, because if you did, you would know that ADHD is "real" and is in fact a type of chemical imbalance in the brain. In reply to: Im talking statistics and inductive reasonings. Please show me these statistics.

...."What is an island?" (he just turned 9 BTW) His answer: "It's water, trees, sand and dirt." That's a correct answer, he's unique, he doesn't HAVE add/adhd, everything you just stated is easily arguable, but i'm too tired...
