So I am interested in getting a dog. I would like to get it for my kids for Christmas and have them think it is from Santa. I guess I never realized what you have to go through to get a rescue dog.I was searching online the local APL's and they have 'applications' you have to fill out. You have to have two references and they want to come see your home. They also stipulate that they can come to our home anytime they wish, and if for some reason I cannot keep the dog anymore, they insist I have to bring it back to the shelter. Which is all fine with me, but if no one adopts these animals, they do get put to sleep. I just find it interesting that you have to go through all these hurdles to adopt a dog, but crackhead mothers can keep thier babies.Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has bought a rescue animal and if you know if these rules are really that strict, or do they have to include these kind of stipulations to cover themselves.

I used to work for a animal charity, that specialised in taking German shepherd from idiot owners who bought them as a status symbol, home checks, and rehoming them with new families..........it was heartbreaking, one particular bitch, was so frightened she literally dragged herself on her stomach she was too scared to stand, and constantly pee'd herself she was so frightened of everything. We brought her home and worked with her for months, until she was ready to be rehomed, with a LOT of TLC she turned into such a wonderful dog i hated to let her go, but i already had two.I got my dog and bitch from the charity i worked for, both were in bad ways when i got them, and wouldn't have gone straight to a home if i hadn't taken them, but would have had to have lots of work. The regulations are there, not for good owners like yourself, but for the multitude of bad owners out there who go to a rescue cos its cheaper than buying a dog..............It is a shame that you have to go through all that to have a dog, when some parents arn't fit to have a dog never mind a child. The only thing is, we would never rehome over christmas, so you're lucky if the rescue near you do, choice carefully and dono't rush into it, and you will give a lovely animal a wonderful home hugs

Well I adopted a Greyhound like 2 years ago. Same thing as you described. Honestly they're not as stricked as they sound. They just want to make sure the dog is going to a good home. They will want to come out to your home to see if you have a fenced in back yard and if not what are your plans on letting the dog outside to go potty. Sounds like a lot but really it's not as stricked as it sounds.Unfortunately the Greyhound i adopted I ended up giving back to the adoption agency because she had a thyroid problem that was causing her to drop weight quickly even though she was eatting like 8 cups of dog food a day. They also ended up putting her to sleep without letting me know.. I was pretty upset, she was a wonderful loving dog.So make sure to ask a lot of questions about the dog you are interested in.

Great Idea! I bet they would love it…lolWe just got a puppy from doggie rescue about three months ago... She doing very well, except for the chewing stage that she is in now. She eats up her chew toys faster than we can purchase them…lolIt wasn't that difficult to get her. They just wanted to make sure we weren’t gonna abuse her or neglect her. Some people just kind of forget that it is a very big life long commitment and they have to be cared for just like kids….Older dogs might have some bad habits so ask a lot of questions about where it came from, why it was taken to the SPCA and if it has any health issues you need to be concerned about…..All in all… it cost us about $85.00 Take some pictures for us....

Thank you guys! And Angel that was very informative. I did not realize all that. hugsIt is not a big deal if we get one before Christmas. We just thought it would be cute if the kids thought Santa brought it for us. I just wish parents were held to these expectations.

I adopted two of the three cats I had from animal shelters (one came from my friends, who forgot to neuter their cats). The dogs I've had were pretty much all strays. In any case, the same rules applied for the cats. I don't think many people actually get vists to their home. I think they're just trying to discourage people who might not be cut out for pet ownership. You won't have any problems.
Depending on how much turmoil there is at your house during Christmas, it might be easier for the dog to wait until a bit after the holiday.
It's great that you want to adopt a dog from the shelter! They have some of the greatest animals....they just need a home.

He sounded really cute! I bet he was! They say dogs look loike their owners.. Are you a sexy ball of love Mr. "U"???

lol, yep and I lick everyone! We entered him into an amature dog show. He was given a special certificate for being the "Biggest, Lickiest Dog"

ROTFLMAO....I got the visual too.... Thanks

It's a sucky process but it makes sense that they do it, cause they're not gonna want to send an animal that has already lived in a bad enviroment, to live in yet another bad enviroment.

angel, thats so sad. poor girl. kudos for looking after her i remember when i was getting my dog there was a german shepperd next to her that would just bark constantly so no-one wanted to take her on but she was such a lovely dog. my dog had some problems when she came to us too and still has little things shes kept from her past. her owners split up and obviously were fighting quite a bit. she still gets uneasy when anyone raises their voice, even if its completely harmless joking. she climbs all over us begging for us to stop. she was so withdrawn when she came to us too. we had to literally teach her how to play. cheeky little madam she is now its so much better getting a rescue dog than a puppy though. you know the puppies are going to get homes but you never know with the unwanted dogs. theres just far too many dogs out there now and not enough homes.congrats on choosing to get a resuce by the way. you'll know when the right ones there for you

So, I just wanted to let you know, we adopted a dog. We can't have him until Friday though because he is getting nuetered. He is a lab mix and so friendly and cute. I wanted to take all of the dogs home with me.And just so you know, they had us bring the kids down so they could make sure the dog would interact well with them. The kids are so excited! Thanks for all the input guys.

my love for dogs would say, save a poor dog by adopting one from the pound, rather then 'applying' for a dog, specially rescue dogs, which will probably be more useful if they are giving to a handicap then a family. i would advise not to get an old dog so the kids wont cry.. for while, and if ur planning to buy a puppy, never pet store.. those are left over unpurebreds from breeders, or they just cant get sold by breeders. i would say get "shelties/ shetland sheepdog", which are mini colis that are very very children friendly, protective, and doesnt require much work

Anyone else care to field that one? I'm taking a break.

I want a dog soo bad! You're lucky though. We would get one but our neighbor next door has soooo many cats and kittens and they sometimes get in our house so it's not going to work out. Those cats get pretty freaky deaky man. I mean... really... really... freaky. Nine lives too many! We tried having a dog though but he died when we went to visit some relatives in North and South Carolina. Really sad.
