I've decided that I'm definitely taking a year off next year, where I'll work and spend some time travelling. Originally, my plan was to go to Japan, but I'm thinking of another option. First of all, I plan on going to university the year after and pursuing a medical degree (requires 2-4 years prior to med school in another program, I plan on doing my Bachelor of Sciences), and part of the reason for my reconsidering has to do with that. Both the opportunity to experience something related to it, and I need 200+ volunteer hours by that point.I've been thinking of travelling to a third world country (I have yet to plan this specifically) through some sort of organization and volunteer to do some sort of service there, particularily delivering medical services. I was kind of inspired to do this through hearing about someone who did just this. They went out and did this for both the volunteer hours and to experience something like that. Apparently the person thought it was a great experience and realized that they do for sure want to be a doctor. That's the kind of experience that can't be had in school, and I've thought about doing something similar.Unfortunately, I don't really know any of the details on this and I completely forgot where I heard this. I was wondering if anyone knows any organizations that I could do this through and if anyone has any specific information from people they know or otherwise (because obviously I don't at this point). I really want to do this, and this is my best opportunity to get involved with something like this.

Travelling After High School
-
be careful though. So very many people never return to school after taking a break.

not really, here in the UK a lot of people take a gap year, im planning to do one next year too, and afterwards go to uni..i dont think its so common in the statesmy brother also took a year out and went to new zealand and worked in a school there and went travelling afterwards.next year, im hoping to go to berlin and live with one of my mums friends(my mum is german), earn some money and just get a normal job..then once ive got some money together, after christmas i really want to go to someplace Asia, maybe vietnam, im not sure, i havnt sorted that part out yet, lol, i think i might work at a school or something, do the same thing that my brother did and go travelling afterwards. im not sure yetbut i say, go for it, i know im really knackered this year with countless exams etc, as cliche as it sounds, i really just need to find myself, that sounds so cheesey but i just want to do something by myself independantly without my parenst going on at me.theres loads of websites on this, just type 'Gap years' in google and theres many organizations that will organise it for you...or if you live in the uk go to STA travel, they have really good advice on gap years.

I think it's a great idea. Be sure to have a plan on what you want to do after your gap year though, since there is the tendency for some people not to continue their education after doing that. That's only some people though. It's also been shown that people who take a break have a much lower tendency to burn out in college or university and generally like what they're studying better since they've had time to get away from school.Aside from that stuff, travelling is just awesome. I can't wait to go somewhere, wherever I decide to go.
