My horse, Moke, recently got put down (November 23rd). He was 21 year old, and he had been very ill since the beginning of November. I knew he had to be put down the minute he got sick, but Moke and I stuck it out with a boatload of antibiotics and constant paranoid care. When he finally was put down, my coach and various other people did it under my nose. They didn't tell me till the next morning. I was furious!! I couldn't talk to anyone about it for nearly a week. Of course, I kept going to the barn and doing my chores (I work there) and cleaning up Moke's old things. I knew it was for the better.I wasn’t terribly sad, even though I missed my old friend very much. We had been buddies since April 2005. It wasn’t a very long relationship, but it was a strong one. I was being home schooled, so he was my constant companion. Now, three weeks later, everything is starting to sink in. I’m so unmotivated and sad. I keep comparing the horse I’m riding now to Moke. I keep noticing the differences and what made Moke so awesome. The new horse (he doesn’t belong to me) is really sweet, but he’s lazy and just so…different. He has no work ethic, unlike Moke who would rather be working then standing around eating. I know I should be riding this horse at least 4 times a week, but I find myself having to really work at doing it. I have to push myself to even get on, let alone do something serious to advance this horses’ training. I honestly don’t know what to do. Riding is my passion, but here I am, unable to really enjoy it. I haven’t talked to my coach or my parents about this yet because I’m pretty sure it’ll pass… But any suggestions to help it pass faster would be greatly appreciated! Moke Moke 2 Austin

I think its disgusting that they put Moke down under your nose, I think it would have been better for you to be there when it was done.I think you can only wait for the pain to go. The best thing I can suggest is put your mind into something else, your going to have to really force the motivation outa you. I hope you feel better soon.

my coach and various other people did it under my nose. I think you meant "behind your back" under your nose would mean they did it right in front of you. It's understandable that you are upset and depressed. The folks who did this were only trying to protect you from grief. It's not easy to see this take place especially if you care about the horse.

Hey I am right there with you. On my 20th Birthday we had to put down my horse. She had collacked (I do not know how to spell it)...any who it was very disturbing, even more so b/c we had to leave the body there for 1 day to wait for the people to come clean it up. It is hard when you have such a bond with a friend.

first u got to remind ur self that horses are like people (well there not but they are...) NO horse is like another. some are easy going, some are stubern, some are horny..lol we have this horney ass mare she's funny but any way.. some are laoud, some r quite, lazy, and /or hard workers. slow learnes and fast learners. exetra..My mom and dad are trainers/breeders/and my mom is a rifding coach too. we have had to put a few down and sold alot...again selling is just another thing that mom and dad do. we had a stud colt born with no hove bone andhad to put him down. he was just a baby.. sweet really colored up toby stud colt. he was going to be mine and i halter broke him ( i help mom do that with all of them) but they didn;t do wut they did to u. i would be so pissed off if they had doen that to me. but i understand ( and know) he was in pain every day ..wut that's hell. his pain wasn't like mine (my pain isn;t do to horses though.. ) but his was phisical. i mean if i was 4 months old and my little foot bone decided to stop growing it could be fixed. but they couldn't fix his. the vet had Never seen such. i know ur upset and hurting cuz of wut happend but maybe ur morepissed at ur parents and coach for wut they did. i'm sure if there was a chance of saving him they would have (i know my mom would) they should have told u though... i dk how to Motivate u to riding more. or wut to say exept horses are differnt. give t his new horse a chance.
