Let me say this right off the bat: Please Do Not Hijack This thread. Thank you.Ok, So what do you think happens when you die? Has anyone here actually flat-linned and seen what happens? I caught a proffessor of mine in the hallway and we got on to discussing this, and it really got me thinking. Its difficult to conceive what happens if the mind isnt there anymore. If you believe in god, what do you think it is? What if it just nothing. Thats it. The lights go out.

Death

Personally Im sure its just lights out end of existance.I couldbe wrong, but I dont belive in god or ghosts or zombies or vampires or were wolfs or any other damned thing. Its possible Im wrong, but since your asking opinions Ill share.
-
There was a thread on this exact topic a number of months ago...I can't find it anymore.
"Flat lining" in not death. The "light through the tunnel" thing, as well as other common "near death" experiences, are explainable through brain activity observed during brain imaging studies.
No one has ever died and come back, so your question is impossible to answer.
What happens when you are under deep anesthesia, and you higher brain functions cease for a while, and you're completely unconscious? What would happen if you were frozen in liquid nitrogen indefinitely?
What happened before you were born? What was it like? What is it like not to be born? To me, those questions don't make any more sense than asking what happens after you die.
It's funny...people can't imagine a universe without them.

I can easily imagine the universe with out me, i just can conceive not thinking. the thought of just lights out thats it.
-
i just can conceive not thinkingIf you've ever been anesthetized or watched Larry King, you should have a pretty good idea what it's like.

i kinda refuse to think, that nothing happens after you die, that its just nothingness. it sounds lame, but i think i'll take the spiritual way of thinking, soul and mind carry on in some way..
-
some wiccans believe in the 'summerlands' where you are reborn after you die in this world, and live out another life with the energies that you loved here.........and what you do and how you are in this life, effects how you are treated and what you become in the summerlands.........................And don't bother flaming me anyone, steve, cos im not arguing about this.

That sounds really nice Angel and is a good reason to be nice and helpful to each other.
I suppose the catholic in me would say we go to heaven. But I kind of hope there is nothing after we die. I sure as hell do not want to be reincarnated or live my life over again.

i kinda refuse to think, that nothing happens after you die, that its just nothingness. That is the motivation for a lot of spiritual thought and belief.

Well, my dad had some kind of heart surgery, and they stopped his heart for a bit. He said that he felt like all of his pain, stress, everything, just lifted off of him, and he experienced this huge sense of being uninhibited. He saw himself lying there, with all the doctors around him, and then he was pulled somewhere, which is when he saw the famous tunnel of light. Then my dad said he felt a huge tug, and was pulled back into his body, and experienced a LOT of pain.
Make of this what you will... Brain images, Heaven, whatever. I'm just passing it on to you guys.
-
But he was never actually dead. Ketamine can induce experiences similar to what your father described.More on near death experience from skepdic.com.

i kinda refuse to think, that nothing happens after you die, that its just nothingness.Heh, I kinda wish the oposite, nothing sounds good. As they say ignorance is bliss being dead you would not know you were dead infact you wouldnt know anything.
-
You've described Buddhist nirvana. You may have to go through some cycles of rebirth of the non-self first, thoough.
-
I wonder what its like being reincarnated as a cabbage
-
if reincarnation was real, Id hate to come back as like a cockroach or a cow or soemthing.
-
I wouldn't mind coming back as some rich lady's pet poodle, though. Think of how great that life would be.

The spiritual side of me will not answer. It's too afraid. But when I was younger my cousin was/is a major atheist and I think he liked to see me cry he would always say things about how there is nothing when you die you no longer exist, everything you have will disapper, no family or friends. It wouldn't have been as bad if it wasn't for the fact that he made me think about it and put me to bed like that. I think I had nightmares every week. I always use to think that we would end up on another planet in some other universe or something... don't ask.

I believe in heaven, hell, and the spirit moving on to a different place. But almost all of us, if not all, we must die to find out. As for myself, I don't fear death.

I dont like anything I cant figure out with facts
-
Ah but you wouldnt know what you were in a previous life so would you even care if you didnt know better?
