I've always thought about converting to become Jewish, but my boyfriend and my best friend stated that they circumsize women as well as men by cutting out their clitoris. This got me very concerned. I insisted on asking my mother and grandmother and they said it wasn't true for the US, only in a few other countries. Anyone know for certain?

Question about being Jewish
-
They don't do that to women.
-
I think it's only true for some Muslim and/or African faiths.
-
no,no,no.haha.
we dont do that.
while we're at it.
the reason jews circumcise is because they believe as is written in the old testament that their god told abraham that he and every male under his roof must remove their foreskin as a covenant between him and the jews.
just FYI. -
It's not even required by Islam. It's just a cultural tradition in some African cultures.
-
I saw a documentary where there was a tribe that sewed the vagina up until marriage. :open_mouth:
I wonder how they came up with that? "Hmm... we need a trademark of being Jewish... Why not cut off that annoying foreskin?!" Really that is a pretty strange ritual, but I am glad it happened.

In reply to:
the Jews and Christians (I know because I am one) believe that God knew it was a cleaner way to live at that point in time
Where do you get that? I don't believe there is any reference to that in the Bible.

Wow! Thanks everyone for your informative responses. ^^;;

In reply to: Where do you get that? I don't believe there is any reference to that in the Bible. a quick search has 143 instances of 'clean' being in the book leviticusAllbeitmyself is correct. Some of the Levitical law may seem strange to some people in this day in age... some may not.Is it strange to say to 'go to the bathroom' outside of the village? (this is an example of a levitical law). well yes, [cause we have toilet systems of today], but if you lived without sewerage pipes.. then you wouldnt want your poop laying in the middle of the street! God said not to do this thousands of years ago... but how far do we have to go back to find England throwing their toilet mess out of their windows into the streets? Well to be quite frank.. im not 100% sure! but not very long ago! couple of hundred years... 300?My point is, that people of the time did not understand why, they just accepted it.most non jewish people looked at it strangely and did not follow... until science is proving God's law rightanother example is that God said to destroy a pot if its lid became broken. why? apparntly the pots were made individually and lids were not interchangeable, so if a pot lid was destroyed, then the pot had no cover. God's law to destroy the pot is just a simple hygeine law to prevent flies / other animals from spreading disease. easy for us to see today, but not people 3000 years agoanother example is that circumcission was not meant to take place til after the 4th day of birth. pretty strange 'law'? turns out that the human body does not have sufficient blood plattlets to heal bleeding easily until the 4th day after birthsorry to blabber on... and pretty much totally off topicthis is really for sdp! back on topic!you dont have anything to worry bout! i think i've read all the old testament law and do not recall anything like that being described in it!!!i think you have your religions mixed up!

So you're saying God said "circumcise the males because they will be cleaner" is written in this Levitical law or the Bible? Please cite the passages.
-
...no im not saying directly thati was stating some obvious laws that were in the old testament that people did not understand but we are only just beginging to understand, and some are so cleary obvious to us.also.. these laws DONT say "do this do this... BECAUSE disease is easily spread this way". they say only say "do this" pretty much "because I am the Lord your God and have commanded it."i was under the impression that in world war I & II where people could not bathe on a regular basis, that many men had infections on their penis directly related to their foreskin. and therefore it wasnt the most hygienic thing around. however i'm not 100% sure on this... i'm just going by what some ppl (Christian and non Christian) have told me.i guess that in these days hygeine is pretty good and that circumcission could be seen only as a phsyical act... but if the world were to end tomorrow or in the next 100 years.. then through the majority of time, the average hygienic standards would alot lower than it is todaythis is totally off topic of this guys thread and these whole forums... so if you want to debate Christianity with me feel free to pm me

Well the original topic is pretty dead anyways becasue its pretty obvious that female circumcision is not something that is done in the Jewish faith.
I'm just saying that these theories, right or wrong, are just that, a theory. I'm just questioning where it is said. The only thing I know about circumcision is that God told someone to do it as as some sign to the Lord.
-
yeah i'll be happy with you just putting it down to "just a theory," ... a very common 'theory' with many Christians...if you really want to put the theory to test then read the bible.. read all that old lawyou will find that the law is not explained why it was put there to be followed, but rather science is explaining 'why' today... many many centuries afterwardsyes you're right that God said to do it as a sign that they were a dedicated group of people living for Him. But it is possible to say that is a hygenic thing too. personal hygenine was of a lower standard back then, so i'm sure that penile infections were more common, so prehaps this law also increased the health standards of the Jews as did many of the laws.
