My friend just found out the girl he's been sleeping with has herpes.During unprotected sex, does a person with herpes transmit it whenever there is sexual contact with the infected area of their body, or do they have to be having a breakout in order to transmit it?

Contracting Herpes

I think it's most likely to happen when's there's a breakout, but that's not always the case.

So a person with herpes can transmit it by sexual contact, regardless of whether or not their having a breakout?

They have a lesser chance of gettin' herpes when there is not an outbreak, when there is an outbreak, it is almost certain to catch herpes....

That is correct.......with or without an outbreak, a receiver can contract herpes from a partner who has herpres, but the chances are much lower when there is not breakout. Problem with herpres is that the person with it needs to know more about it....like when they know a lesion is about to come to surface (IE: tingling in that rea, that turns to itching, then becomes a full blown lesion) I've been maried 12 years and my husband has yet to contract it from me....we even have him tested twice a year to see if he has the virus even though he's never had an outbreak. So....what does this all say? Someome get it and some don't. But I also take Valtrex DAILY and since doing so, I have an outbreak maybe once a year. Valtrex and NO other medicines will prevent the spread of herpes, but it does help the person with herpres maintain their outbraks. You might mention to this person to get on Valtrex or Zovirax (sp?) ASAP just to help out......but unfortunately, once you have it...you have it forever. (see my post below called "safe sex and herpes")
