The clap

"The Clap" = gonorrhea.
It is a sexually transmitted disease which, in the male, causes a painful discharge from the penis.Untreated it may get in to the blood stream and infect other parts of the body.
In the female, it can infect the cervix and possibly spread up in to the uterus and Fallopian tubes: further spread can occur in to the abdominal cavity causing pelvic inflammatory disease; if untreated it can block the Fallopian tubes and cause sterility.
There are now technics available to do urine tests for GC (and Chlamydia) that do not require taking a swab from the penis.
Any male who has had unprotected sexual contact and who develops a penile discharge should see his physician as soon as possible and abstain from sex until diagnosed and treated.
Gonorrhea in the female may not cause severe symptoms initially: gynecologists will usually check for this when doing the annual Pap smear test.
So the message is - if you have a discharge, get it checked out ASAP.
It is also important that one's sexual partner get checked out. -
that sounds scary

It's not bad if treated right away, although getting a long q-tip shoved deep into your penis hurts like hell. It is always treated with special antibiotics. "The clap" is a very old word that dates back to at least W.W.II. At least back then thats all you had to worry about.

There are no treatments thast involve "needles".

I imagine the reference to needles is referring to the traditional method of taking a swab to test for gonorrhoea up the urethra with cotton on a stick. Alan tells us that's no longer necessary, which is good news. The actual treatment is normally by oral antibiotics.
