http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seasonal_affective_disorderIt's normal for people to need real or fake sunlight in order to stimulate the production of Vitamin D, melanonin, and other related chemicals. Endorphins are extremely important in keeping a person feeling healthy and energetic. If they block endorphins the way they said, then no matter what they're doing they will begin to feel down. Perhaps those people who are getting more sunlight are getting more healthy quantities of those chemicals in their system so the feeling of not having those endorphins is a greater shock to their system. This would be a case of addiction as much as vitamin C deficiency leads one to crave foods high in vitamin C and begin to feel the effects of not having it. This study is inconclusive, but is still very interesting. Generally, greater endorphins produced is a good thing, such as with regular exercise. The question they need to address is if it is really a bad thing that these people are getting an endorphin rush from tanning, since I get the same thing from exercise. I generally feel a lot less energetic and less happy when I'm relatively inactive for a period of time. Exercise keeps me feeling good.To address this, perhaps they should be asking if the endorphin production is worth it at the cost of increased exposure to UV rays and greater risk of melanoma. There are other ways, such as exercise, to increase endorphins.
