what do you need?got a credit card ?if you can shop online I can refer you to soe better deals, if not then it becomes hit and miss andquality costs more so you have to decie a price range and what tempetures you want for tents, sleeping bags, how much wieght do you want to pack? if its car camping its different then if your packing in miles and miles EDIT:a few sites form my bookmarks list: camp for less sierra camp station great outdoors sportsmans guide REI I like this one, Im a member, so I get a return check every year Of course ther is always Ebay, and the army navy surplus.I try to use local retailers as well, you get good shit aside from products, like tips, tricks, best spots, new places you would never of htought to go...

Well I wont be backpacking or anything... we don't have any place to do that in this area. I'm actually looking for some places to get sleeping bags, a tent ('cause I don't want to be eat up by misquittos and other creepy crawlies), and maybe something to cook on. But I don't know where to find them.... I'm going camping for three days in June with a few friends for my birthday and I need to start getting stuff bought so I can be prepared.

As far as prices try walmart or some place similar. Coleman tends to be the best brand. L.L. Bean has really good quality stuff too but they can be pricey.

I edited my post to give ya some clues start shopping.Iv been packing in Texas before.Well, sort of, guadalupe peak, highest point in texas. The whole trip was about 9 hours, the walk the summit, ;lunch and a smoke and walk back out.I prefer to hit the big ones, but it was on the list The whole trip was done in 2 days to drive there, summit and drive home to Salt Lake city. Idid carry a day pack though. The other thing you need to think about Katie is water. camping near the car normally you can take enough water to be fine, but its alot of extra weight, I use a water filter, Iv had it a few years, It was about 120 bucks new, Iv fchanged the filter inside a few times, those are about 20 bucks each at rei. I can pump water froma mud puddle and have it clean and clear and free of bacteria and germs.so long as there is water someplace or I have some plastic anda can I never go thirsty

Coleman ? bleachhhhhactually its ok, I prefer mountain hardware, black diamond, slumberjack, marmmot... the great brands, I buy shit one time, I need great gear that lasts for years so I dont have to replace it, I have a few coleman items, a two burner stove I use if IM by the car with the kids, aside from that I use fthe good shit and my tents are mostly springbar, I own uhhh like 12 tents, different sizes an uses, some for winter one for when I go alone thats a 4 season, so many sleeping bags for different temps that I couldnt even count them unless I walked into the storage room where all my shit is to see. mine, my gfs, the kids, and mine there is atleast 6, some lighter, one down for -50 f thats fairly light, an emergency bivy sack and linefrs and holy shit I got alot of stuff, and I use it all, aside form a tent we got for christmas, havent put it up yet, its got 3 rooms and a patio :P Id off never bought one like it but it sleeps 12 people and the patio has a screen house, it will be good when me, her and my kids and her kids go in the summer near the car.

I'm checking out all the links, thanks Chance. The place we'll probably be camping at wont be too far from civilization, but don't worry, I'll bring plenty of water just in case! Besides, I wouldn't dream of going somewhere to camp without plenty of H20, expecually during one of Texas' hottest months.

when it comes to tents, I really love springbar, one of my tents is a springbar I got back in the early 80's, actually my dfad bought it and I ended up with it in the 90'sstill functions perfectly, the most I had to do was apply some seam sealer a few years ago.light, 4 season, a great tent. I still useit on most trips even though I have several to choose from. If ya were heading to Utah to camp, Id loan ya one of mine for a weekend trip. My springbar is over 20 years old and still gets used every summer and has been thru snow storms, blizzards, sub zero temps, rain and downpours. Iv alwasy stayed nice and warm inside and the worst I had to do is get up in the dark and head outside to knock a foot or so of snow off to keep the tent up rather then sinking further down on to me.

oh do not get me started on REI....They have claimed well over 3-4K dollars of my money over the years....I love that place...Around where I live we have the Redwood Trading Post...Love that place too.REI Has amazing stuff...but look for trading posts too, they kick ass.

I gaveher REI :PI love that place, Im a member and that means i can count on moeny coming from them every year as I spend so much there. You can find better prices alot of times then at REI, if you have time to wait for shipping and shit, if not, I normally go there to buy stuff, especially my climbing gear. I rent alot of stuff from them too, ice boots are 400 bucks, the front point crampons I like are 300, Iv been renting those from them for a few years rather then buy them.f
