we were talking about muscular endurance and strength and all that stuff...and the teacher dude said sumthing about how ur born witha certain amount of muscle fiber...and u cant get more...all u can do is strengthen the fiber that u have...so my question is...whats that mean really...like scientifically n all?

Health class

yeah, that sounds about right. you have a certain amount of slow twitch and fast twitch muscle fibers. when you build them you are actually stressing them and they grow while rebuilding. so the fibers are actually growing, you aren't adding to the total # of muscle fibers. its kind of the same with fat cells too....
-
okay...but like y doesnt everybody just have the same amount of muscle fibers?...im sure i need to know this for the test
-
because no two people are the same...
-
duh...but what about identical twins...
anyway...does it have to do with ur bodytype?
-
people with different ratios of muscle fibers have different types of bodies.... people with a lot of fast twitch fibers usually get pretty muscular... the slow twitch fibers tend to be longer and leaner muscles....
-
okay...now im getting confused again...ill just read the health book
-
I think you have it backwards. Fast twitch muscles are leaner and, well, faster. Most athletes have more fast twitch muscles. Bodybuilders have more slow twitch muscles. I don't know, I could be wrong. The guy with all the muscles (helmsman) can probably explain it.

no i don't have it backwards...sprinters typically have a lot of fast twitch fibers and they tend to be pretty muscular. distance athletes have more slow twitch fibers and they tend to have the longer leaner muscles. and i'd imagine bodybuilders would have to work both types of fibers pretty hard and probably have a good mix of both.
