HPV is Human Papilloma Virus - it's the virus that causes warts. There are many different strains of it - some that cause the normal warts, some that cause genital warts, and some that can lead to cervical cancer, among others.Herpes is caused by HSV - the Herpes Simplex Virus. There are two strains - one that prefers the mouth area and causes cold sores there, and the other that prefers the genitals; however, each strain can colonise either area and cause symptoms. Both HSV and HPV hang around in the body for a long time. Yes, it's possible to have either and notice no symptoms. HSV causes break-outs of sores from time to time - during the breakouts it is very contagious; when there are no symptoms it is much less contagious, though it can still be transmitted. I'm not sure about the transmissibility of HPV when there are no warts; it's certainly possible.
