Hi,I'm getting my wisdom teeth out soon, and I was wondering if it hurts etc. My sister got them out and said it hurts really bad, but I don't believe her. I think she's just trying to scare me or something. So does it hurt to get them out?

Does It Hurt?

If they take them all out at once they usually use a general anaesthetic and you'll be asleep. If they just take one out they use a local, but stronger than usual, and it doesn't hurt. After the anaesthetic wears off the sockets will be sore for a while until it heals, and your jaw will ache.

It really depends on how intrusive they need to be to get them out. They needed to carve away a little bone to get at my lower ones, it was very sore for awhile, and I was on tylenol with codine for over a week to help with it.
Wisdom teeth can be a pain in the ass, but really, it gives you a good reason to relax and take it easy. You won't feel any pain (after they're removed) that's very sharp or sudden, you'll just have a sore jaw and gums with a little difficulty chewing for a little while.
To be honest, I know this probably isn't a good thing, but I enjoyed being under the influence of the general anaesthetic for the rest of the day following the removal and consistant tylenol with codine afterwards. Was a very low stress, carefree, and relaxing week (was also during the summer though). Hope you like soup, mashed potatoes, cooked vegetables, etc. because you'll be eating strictly soft stuff for at least a couple days.

It depends how well you take pain really.I was awake as they removed all my wisdom tooth (of course they used local anesthetic to numb) and I went to work that same day. I had little discomfort, and only took the first dose of pain medication because I wasn't sure what to expect. I’m not much of a pill popper unless I have too.Now there are extractions called Full Bony extractions and Part Bony extractions. Basically that’s when the wisdom teeth have not full grown out of the bone and the doctor will have to go down and detach the tooth from the bone. Those can be more abrasive and can cause swelling and bruising on the face.I work in a dental office and I have seen many people get wisdom teeth extracted, trust me you’ll be fine. If you have discomfort it’ll last 1-2 weeks max and you’ll be back to normal. Main things to remember are no smoking, no drinking through a straw, and no hot liquids for about 48 hours.

Oddly for me there was not much pain under local anestetic. Depends on your nerve route I guess.

I had all four taken out and they did not put me to sleep. I consider myself to have a pretty high pain tolerance, but teeth pain is in a whole category of it's own. I am seriously traumatized by my wisdom teeth removal. But honestly I believe the oral surgeon was an idiot. He could not remove the last tooth, so after a few days of crazy pain and swelling I went to the emergency room. Their oral surgeon was great! He got it out in like five seconds and I had great relief after that.Sorry, I hope I did not scare you. Just make sure you take your pain meds and antibiotics they give you, keep your mouth clean and you should be alright.

I had all four of mine taken out at once. I was put to sleep, as they had not started to come through yet. I had severe pain afterwards. I developed dry socket in all four areas and was in bed for 2 weeks afterwards. My boss just had 2 taken out last week and was back to work the same day. It just depends.

I had my 1 top and 1 bottom removed. Ther bottom one was harder to remove but I had some sedation so I felt great straight after. I was a very naughty girl though and smoked and I got an infection in my lower gap which hurt like hell. I remember like it was yesterday driving to my friends in agony with a tea towel wrapped round my head as the cold air hurt my gap and pleaded with her to give me some painkillers. On reflection I think it was that my hubby had got tired of giving me sympathy as I was moaning so I needed some TLC. You will be ok it will be sore but if you do smoke then don't as it will give you mega pain as I found out the hard way!!
