Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in. The bellhop fbeing the greedy bastard he is, sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes to buy a cheap bottle of rot gut with his new found fortune. Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night.(3 X 9= 27) We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 (27 + 2 = 29)which was originally spent. Where did the other dollar go? Because im a bastard Im not posting the answer, this question bothered me for a long time, and really I suck at math, its been fucking years since I heard it and once in a while it pops up in my head and fucks with me, I finally found someone who knew the damned answer. Ill post the answer in a day or twof, but first I wondered if anyone could figure it out on thier own, if so feel free to make fun of me for fnot knowing it for so long.

Why math is a pain in the ass
-
They did not each pay $9 for the room, they paid (25/3) each for their roomThe bill is only $25, not $27 as the riddle assumes in the end.Basically the riddle fucks up when it says they pay $9 for each room, which is false. The bill ended up being only $25 so they each paid for thta, and they got $3 from the rest of the $5 back and the thief stole the other 2Dunno if that's the answer but it makes sense to me
-
Thats not a thief, thats a entrepreneur
-
The money belonged to the 3 guys right? And he only gave them 3 out of the 5 and kept the $2, right? How is that not a thief?
-
OMG I think I got it. And I'm currently failing algebra 2. Haha....Okay if you subtract the $5 from the orignal $30 you get $25. Add the $2 dollars the bellhop took then you get $27. Then add the last $3 the friends got back.
30-5=25
25+2=27
27+3=30 -
Wow you're failing Algebra 2 (COOL!) and STILL figured it out? You must be a genius.Does anyone but me realize if you can add/subtract (1st grade math?) that you can solve this?
-
Okay if you subtract the $5 from the orignal $30 you get $25. Add the $2 dollars the bellhop took then you get $28. Then add the last $3 the friends got back. you got that a lil mismatched there honey "Okay if you subtract the $5 from the orignal $30 you get $25. Add the $2 dollars the bellhop took then you get $27 Then add the last $3 the friends got back.

you just said practically the same thing.
-
It is practically the asme thing, except for the addition error a person in high school (=you) made. It's ok though.

ya i know my quote thingy doesnt work i was just informing you that you typoed a few numbers

I'm not being an ass, just telling the truth.. or is that a no no on these boards these days?
-
oh just explained it different than the equations.
-
ok sure i couldve wrote it better still but, hmm?just explained what different than the equations?
-
Well you didn't need to make that comment about it being 1st grade math and saying I must be a genius for figuring it out. I'm sorry I can't be perfect. I actually had a B last quarter in algebra my teacher only based the progress reports on one grade. So everyone is "failing".
-
You did fine..! People need to stop putting people down..
-
I the 2 and the 3 don't match up they are switched around. If you you still don't get what I mean read the written explanation and follow the equations as you go. They're mixed up but still add up to the same thing.

Ok.If the bell hop gave back 3 dollars to the men, that means that they only spent $28 dollars, because 30-5=25+3=28 (plus the 2 for the pocket of the bell hop) =30.The riddle is just suppose to screw you up by giving false info. and using math against us, in a way.I hope I am right or close... (I just looked at what other people said, I didn't cheat.)

The first one was definately directed at me. When your pissed you jump to conclusions.

Thank you, at least one person knows what it means when you write something on a seperate line.
