My OB does use metal ones.

First trip to the OB-GYN
-
I talked to my mom about a PAP test, and she said that she didn't know if they'd do it since it was my first time.
Also, my hymen isn't broken. Would the speculum be large enough to break it?
I'm glad it'll be fast though.
-
Most likely they will give you a pap. It is important for all girls to start getting them when they get their period, and to keep getting them yearly.
The hymen will most likely be broke during the exam.
-
Metal speculums seem archaic.I do believe they have smaller speculums for young girls.
-
My mom said hers wasn't broken, just stretched. I'd go by that but I'm not sure if the speculum has changed any since my mom's first trip. She said she thinks it was a little bigger than a tampon.
I hope my doctor has a smaller speculum... That'd really ease my worry.

In reply to: The hymen will most likely be broke during the exam. This may be a bit off topic, but are you saying a doctor may break the hymen with the speculum?(I have been to the gyn's, but I live in a different country, mind you. I don't think they use speculums on virgins here).I'm just thinking - what if it is important for the girl to stay intact for religious or whatever reasons? The doctor may then mess up her life...
-
I'm more worried about bleeding everywhere and being embarassed or having it hurt and then being really paranoid about my next visit. But I see your point about it needing to remain intact for religious reasons.
-
Hon, these arn't pleasant experiences, but you will have to have them regularly to be healthy, and when you have babies etc LOL If you bleed etc, no worries they will have seen it all before, it may hurt a little, but i woudln't say a lot and its not a sharp pain more of a dull ache for a little while, then its gone. This kinda thing isn't a big deal, the doctors and nurses have done it about a million times before, to them its just a precedure, and if you can get it in your mind that its nothing big, it takes 5 mins and then you can forget about it, it won't be a big deal for you either. Relax, its not a nice thing, but its far from a horrible painful thing, like childbirth LOL
-
Once you start going you'll get used to it. My doctor makes me feel so comfortable its just like an anyday check up for me. Just remember to stay cool and that it doesnt take long and it will be over before you know it!
-
i went to a woman's health clinic for a check up. I never went to a gyno though, but i just wanna say i think they also use plastic speculums...im not sure if they use it in other clinics..
-
they used a plastic speculum when i went as well, never seen a metal one
-
I've had both. I haven't really noticed a difference between them.
