So I've been growing out my fingernails (I used to chew on them/the skin around them) and I was wondering if there is stuff I should do? It's been a week and a half, and I've been rubbing lotion on my cuticles, and I just clipped my nails today (to get rid of the chewed-on stuff). Is there any special maintenence I need to do? How long will it take for the skin around them to heal? Also, under my nails it itches... Is this just a side effect of not chewing my nails anymore? PS...The infection magically cleared up on it's own, it might have something to do with all of those damn tomatoes I ate, but anyways.

Bitten nails are sometimes more brittle than nails that havn't been chewed, so keep them short to start with, there is hand and nail lotions that you can use too, as for the cuticles just keep your fingers moisturised daily, rubbing cream in and around the fingertips..........well done for stopping biting, i used to bite my nails all the time, and sometimes still do when im stressed.

A little over a month ago I decided to stop biting my finger nails. I never had the itchy feeling under my nails. I haven't trimmed them either. They are just now at the point where I am starting to see them over my fingers, at least some of them barely. I really like them. I am constantly picking at them too, because I am used to biting them. I started painting them, with finger nail polish, to help discourage me from biting them, but the polish chips alot and I am constantly re-painting them. It is cool too, I have a new weapon.

I know I can't paint my nails, otherwise I chew off the paint.
