When the dentist drills out the old fillings, he need to take appropriate precautions to keep chunks of amalgam from going all over your mouth. A dental dam must be used. Unfortunately I kept winding up with pieces of filling trying to work their way down my throat. In any case, when the filling are drilled, a bunch of mercury vapor is released. I am happy that all of my amalgam fillings for a num have been gone for a number of years.Side note: I don't think composite filling are very rugged, at least if they're on the surface of a molar.

As Steve said there are precautions done to limit the amount of lose amalgam after a restoration is done. It’s not 100% effective and why you would rinse the mouth thoroughly after a restoration is done.Secondly, it hasn't exactly been proven yet that the mercury in amalgam is even dangerous. They use a inactive form of mercury. I am not going to say it's not dangerous, but also they haven't proven that it is. Remember if something was harmful the ADA and such would have it pulled off the market (at least in theory)And yes the white filling, composite, it no where near as sturdy as amalgam and will never last on the Occlusal (Surface) of a tooth just from daily use of eating.

Due to a flouride imbalance my teeth when I was younger (pre-teen) I have a natural stain to them that is not like normal staining from cola etc. I admit my oral hygine is pretty poor, would brushing twice a day, using mouthwash etc be able to fix this staining? I believe I heard it once called fluorosis? Maybe not, it was along time ago...I have seen pictures of repulsing teeth due to the condition, and I must stress my teeth are not like that at all, its very mild, infact (somewhat annoyingly) people mistake it for just poor oral hygine...any advice? Infact I found a pic, its NOT my teeth, and Im male, but its pretty similar (note those green things are ARROWS pointing lol, not some kind of mold

To be honest I don't think there is really any way to correct this issue. But on way to help make your teeth stronger is to get a fluoride rinse. I believe its Plax that has a fluoride rinse you can get over the counter. From my understanding the staining is permanent. I wouldn’t recommend bleaching because it’ll strip your teeth and since you have a fluoride deficiency that’s really the last thing you need; it’ll make your teeth very sensitive. Down the line fi your teeth get brittle or start to deteriorate your dentist can do crowns that will make your teeth look nice, and make them a lot stronger.

I am British(I live in London), and brush my teeth at least twice a day. It is not true that most british people have bad teeth.
