I found a peculiar thread in the archive from earlier this year that evolved into a discussion of racial pride, where one long-time poster defended the idea of "white pride", but in in a racist way, comparing it to black pride, Italian pride, etc.To me, the idea of white pride and black pride are both silly, although the latter is far more understandable. It seems odd to be proud of a superficial characteristic. It makes no more sense than brown hair pride or strawberry blonde pride. If you're a proud white guy, and you have medical condition that turns your skin dark, do you become not proud, or do you become a proud black guy? What about AB negative or O positive blood pride? Why do people need to divide themselves from other groups and be proud about it? Why can't they be proud of their individuality, proud of who they are, and proud of what they've accomplished? If someone gets to be proud because he was born with some particular amount of melanin in his skin (and apparently he gets to be proud no matter how much or how little...beige pride...tan pride...swarthy pride), then doesn't the word "pride" lose its meaning? It reminds me of the recent trend in schools, where everyone gets a prize, no matter how well or how poorly they done, because we must not risk damaging a person's self-confidence...or is it self-esteem? It all becomes meaningless. True achievement means noting.Being white is not an achievement. What exactly are people who claim white pride proud of?

White Pride

I'm proud of what and who I am. By default that includes my race and herritage.my "hierarchy of paradigms" includes these aspects of who I am. so, where do we draw the lines in self pride? I dunno.I'm not proud to be white but I have a certain pride in my Northumbrian herritage and I'm also proud to be Canadian.I have one or two physical characteristics that I may be proud of but I certainly can't take credit for because I was just born that way.Maybe that't the answer... only be proud of what you can take credit for
-
It's ok to be proud of what you are and where you come from but, it becomes a problem when people start to think that they are better than others because of what they are. That's where I draw the line.
-
I'm white. Should I be proud of that, even if I don't think it makes me better than people of other colors? Should I be proud that I have a thigh bone, a cerebellum, and red blood? What is the point? Doesn't that just diminish the word "pride?Should I be proud that I have red blood?Do people dumb down the word "pride" to mean "pleased with"?
-
I am proud to be human. Just hope animals don't read this.
-
I'm proud that I spell colour properly
-
And gray of course.
-
and "grey".... times four (funny to se another A2A cough)
-
Haha, I both posted 4 times and used the wrong spelling of grey. I must need sleep...
-
I'm proud of what and who I am.I'm proud to be a gigantic schizophrenic lobster-zombie from outer space. GNIARF!
-
Oy what a thread to dig up Steve...I don't see anything wrong with being proud of yourself for something you accomplish, or even being proud of your heritage. I'd even go as far as to say it healthy to be proud of your heritage.I think things start to get dangerous when people start to think their heritage or accomplishments are better than someone else’s heritage/accomplishemt; their pride is worth more than another’s pride. People need to understand that it’s okay to have self-pride but to understand another persons self pride is just as equal to their pride.

I'm white and I'm not racist against anyone, but I don't think it's so fair that there is a B.E.T. channel and magazines like Ebony, but if there was a "W.E.T." channel (that sounds a little odd haha) or an "Ivory" magazine, everyone not white would accuse that was racist. I just think things like race-specific channels or magazines are segregated- exactly what was fought against around the 50's and 60's. Also, black history month? I think that's a little racist. I don't see a White, Latino, Native American, Asian or any other racial group's history month!
-
the standard argument aginst you sentiment is that every magazine and every channel is for white people so you don't need one specifically, and years ago, that was probably correct.
We're still a number of generations away from an enlightened equality but we've made a lot of progress. What ever type of pride anyone has, it should also be seasoned with humility and respect for others

Mr U im really proud of you

If you really want to eliminate racism, forget about it...then everyone else will find it easier to do the same. Then one day, voila...nobody's thinking about it!How do you keep racism around? You ensure folks think about it all the time. "Black Pride"...the "Black Studies Club"...yada, yada, yada...all draw attention to racial differences. They ensure racism will be around for many years to come. Wonderful.

You have cause and effect quite confused. Employers aren't tossing the resumes of certain people into the trash because there's a black-oriented cable channel. There was no BET when blacks were forced to live a second- (or third-) class life in the South before the 60's. (And the conservative movement did a fat lot of good to address that problem; they were nothing but obstructions.)
You sound like a typical Midwestern WASP (how's that for stereotyping?) who has never been given grief over his race, religion, or ethnicity. It's really easy to criticize when you're in that boat. I don't think non-minorities are generally able to empathize with minorities and what they have to deal with.
I realize (from another thread) that you think everyone who's not a WASP in this "Christian Nation" of ours should get with the program and become white, overweight, drive big cars, and worship Jesus. As lame as that idea is, people can't change the color of their skin.
It would be great if there were be a day when people won't suffer prejudice based on superficial characteristics. When it comes to bending sheet metal, why should it matter if you eat tacos or hamburgers? People group together when they feel they're under attack. That's even true for the misguided whites who join the KKK and other white power groups.
This country would be far more screwed up if civil rights / equal rights / voting rights legislation was never passed. You can't force white people to like black people, but you can force them to treat them (more or less) fairly in a professional setting. It might eventually change the way people think, so no one feels the need to be part of a (fill in the blank)-power group.
-
SteveA - You have serious stereotyping issues...it's no wonder you think the answer to racism is to keep it alive. If you knew anything about being a government employee, you'd know that white males are the most expendable group of folks out there...there are no quotas to fill concerning them and they have no activist groups to back them up if they are treated unfairly. So as far as my not having been the brunt of unfair racial (and sexist) treatment, you aren't using your brain. Think, man!Until you forget about race completely, it will always be an issue.

In reply to: SteveA - You have serious stereotyping issues LMAOnow we separate the skimmers from the readers!!YAY for skimmer pride day (there was a long article in the paper about it but we're still not sure if anyone will show up for the parade)
