"which keeps the past (and its negativity) alive."In many places that past and negativity are still very much alive and thriving.>>>"Peoples attitudes about racism aren't going to change because of laws...they're going to change when they forget about race and accept everyone the way they are."That argument is a complete fallacy. Study the civil rights movement a see just how willing people where to forget race before the government forced integration. ___________________________________________________________Hmmmm...let's see now. Doesn't your first response answer as to the validity of your second response? In other words, if racism still exists with all the laws on the books, isn't it fair to say that laws have not eliminated racism?Racism is about peoples attitudes...not laws.

Everything you've said in this thread is starting to sound like your saying that just because people are proud of who they are means they're prejudice against people of other races. To me that just sounds like stereotyping. I'm white and I think it's pretty cool that I have an interesting heritage, but I don't flaunt it. I am also proud to say that I have family members who are black.

well of course the laws have not elliminated it !however, they do help protect the rights of people that are not white.I agree racism will be here forever, until, we forget about it.but with no laws on it, the bullshit will only continue.its parents teaching it to kids that keep it alive, so long as people do that there has to be laws to protect those that suffer from its effects.Ever seen little kids in daycare? fthey have no idea that fthe darker skinned ones are different, the darker ones dont notice that the lighter ones are different, they know they can play with them and that they have fun. take a kid thats 7 years old though and you stat getting hte nigger word tossed ina nd the little ones feeling ashamed for being who they are. that 7 year old didnt suddenly have a chromosone kick in and dredge up all that racist bullshit, they learned from mom and dad that white is right, anything else is wrong.while it cant disapear as long as people people are talking about it and enacting legislation, it also only becomes more widespread and grows by pretending it doesnt exist. So long as ingornace thrives in the minds of men, the laws are needed to protect people

So those newsreels showing governors and state police blocking the entrances of universities to black students was a fabrication? Blacks couldn't physically get in until federal troops were sent. Did my parents imagine seeing the trappings of apartheid in the South through the early 60's? Are you serious? If you're going to make a case, you can't just state your conclusion as if it's a well-known fact.
> Just because he admits what he does doesn't mean he's exonerated of it.
I'm saying that non-minorities tend not to be able to put themselves in the shoes of minorities, and understand what some deal with on a daily basis. Your thorough insensitivity supports that idea.

My son is 8 and shows no signs of any racism and I'm proud of the job I'm doing there.I grew up in a WASP family in a very homogenic neighbourhood but fortunately, my dad worked at the university so when they had parties, the guests tended to be from all over the world. That's the way I grew up. In reply to: So long as ingornace thrives in the minds of men, the laws are needed to protect people well said

**Again chance, i totally agree with ya. It really is parents who teach hatred, racism and discrimination.........kids know they don't like someone cos of how they act, or take their toys, they could care less about what colour they are, what their sexuality is, or if they have a disability even. Until we teach our kids that its ok to like someone for who they are and NOT to hate them for what they are, rasicm and discrimination will never stop! **
-
Ironic.I never knew what racism was! Then i attend this school and figured it out the hard way!Not only parents need to teach their kids, kids need to teach other kids!

In reply to:When you encounter an argument you can't answer or if you do answer, it counters your previous argument, you use double-speak and innuendo and toss information that has nothing to do with the argument, ie "Beyond the fact that I'm white, how exactly do you know anything about me?" which you still didn't answer after all this time.It is not clear to me what you mean. You said that minorities should be allowed to speak for themselves, implying that I'm not a minority, or that even if I'm not a minority, I shouldn't speak on the topic. Did I misunderstand you?I think there's something you misunderstood in what I wrote. I thought it was reasonably clear.> you use...all the timeI see. All the time. Is that some type of rhetorical device? In reply to:You showed us a picture of yourself with an alligator and your many posts tell us a little about you. That I'm a Florida redneck? You can tell from the photo you saw that I'm white, but not much else.

**Whats ironic?

That you mentioned the parents thingy.

I am also proud to say that I have family members who are black.I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying that skin color is a superficial characteristic, like blood type and hair color, and I'm not sure why anyone would be particularly proud of the particular amount of malanin that their skin contains. It does not mean that they're prejudiced.I am making the generalization, that is supported by data, that majority groups tend to be insensitive to minority groups. That idea was well understood by the founding fathers, who set up the system to prevent to some reasonable extent the "tyrrany of the [political] majority".

Thor>> Hmmmm...let's see now. Doesn't your first response answer as to the validity of your second response? In other words, if racism still exists with all the laws on the books, isn't it fair to say that laws have not eliminated racism?> But where would we be wthout the laws? Not where we are today.Indeed. Murder still exists. Does that mean that laws against murder serve no useful purpose?
-
your 8 yea old is only that way BECAUSE of YOU.had that same child been in anothe family that believed all that bullshit about white is ight, he would be just anothe redneck idiot. That is exactly my point too.theres an old anthax song that said something about ignorance is learned not inherited. They had it right. I know the song was on state of euphoria, Ill have to go diggin up lyrics later when I have more time. anyone could become one of hte shitheels, its all in how you were raised and what ideas where instilled in your head as a child. very few people overcome what they were taught as childen by thier parents to progress the future along.
-
"Indeed. Murder still exists. Does that mean that laws against murder serve no useful purpose?"Racism is a moral issue...and history has shown, time and again, that you cannot legislate morality. Laws should be a reflection of our morality. In the case of murder, they are...most people understand it's wrong to go around killing people without there being laws to tell them so. Racism isn't there yet...we need the right attitude first. Without it, the laws won't do anything because people will always be able to find a way around them.
-
I dont think there should have to be laws to protect certain people. there are already laws tha tprotect everyone, why do we need extra ones to protect gays, minoritys, and any other group.is that what your getting at?I think Im following you, but I wanted to make sure before I presented an argument on it.
-
Radeckl - methinks you got some quotes mixed up?
-
"I dont think there should have to be laws to protect certain people. there are already laws tha tprotect everyone, why do we need extra ones to protect gays, minoritys, and any other group."Not sure if you were talking to me, but I agree with that. I'm just saying that without the right attitude about racism, no laws are going to wipe it out.
-
As usual I'm a page behind in my responce but.... In reply to: if racism still exists with all the laws on the books, isn't it fair to say that laws have not eliminated racism?Racism is about peoples attitudes...not laws. That kind of Greobbian, Rush Limbaugh "fuzzy" logic only applies in the realm of the propagandist. Study your history there are no questions to the neccessity of the civil rights legistaltion and the impact they had on society.
-
In reply to:I dont think there should have to be laws to protect certain people. there are already laws tha tprotect everyone, why do we need extra ones to protect gays, minoritys, and any other group Thank you!! There are some immigrant laws that i do not really like. I dont need any extra protection from the government neither does my family. The extra laws for like ex Blacks Women Nativs and Immigrants. Well they kinda actually make me more seperated from the others. Some guy a week ago came up to me and told me and my friend who came from Africa here to go back to our countries. We asked why and he said: "You assholes are taking up our space! **** you, you don't deserver more extra rights than me! You're a ******* woman!"
-
"Study your history there are no questions to the neccessity of the civil rights legistaltion and the impact they had on society."If you study your history you will see that, as I have stated before, you cannot successfully legislate morality. Period. ALL history, including that which you refer to, is proof of this. You would think we would all learn by now. The change must be within ourselves...with our own attitudes about race. Pass all the laws you want...it won't make any difference. It has yet to in the history of mankind.
