Basically, when I run I get a pain in my right side of my abs, a very localised area not the entire section. I don't believe it is a stitch. Often I have to stop running for this rather than getting tired. Anyone got any ideas of what this could be. It’s a pain in the fecking arse! It only appears about 2 minutes into the run and I am not even out of breath. It also, I wouldn't say hurts but contracts or something in the same place when I sneeze. Thanks for any ideas.Mr. Nuts

Pain in right side of abs when running

It may be multiple things but try to focus on controlling your breathing. Take deep breaths and make sure it's coming from your diaphragm - your stomach should be moving not your shoulders. I find that it helped for me to start controlling my breathing by establishing a pattern. For example, breath in over 3 steps, breath out over 3, at low intensity, and breath in over 2 steps, breath out over 2, at high intensity (but only when the 3 really didn't feel like enough). I little weirder one was 2 steps breath in, 3 steps breath out, but I found it helps to teach you to take deep breaths in to match the in/out airflow. I'm almost completely sure that your cramps are being caused by your breathing. You may not feel out of breath, but you may have a weak diaphragm or be working it over a small portion of its potential (thus stressing some muscle fibers far more than others) by breathing shallow and this can cause those deep cramps you get around your abs. Remember, your stomach should be expanding and contracting.Alternatively, what do you eat before you run, and as a slightly more awkward question, do you find you get bad gas or feel like the pain may be coming from your intestine? If so then there's other reasons why you may get cramps, but those kind of cramps tend to be in the lower abdominal region. The most likely reason other than breathing would be that you don't give yourself enough time between eating and running.

You can get some pretty bad gas pains above the navel, where the transverse colon runs. I suppose it's possible that cramps could be caused by the colon (or part of it) spazzing out.

Could be, what I am going to do is go for a run tomorrow at a slower speed and try to control my breathing. If I still get this problem I will......complain some more or something.
And Stevea whats this colon thing you were talking about (I know where and what a colon is) Not quite sure what you are saying, do you think it could be contracting or something due to the run? Do you know whether it is correctable or not?
I usually eat hours before I end up exercising. Not eating crap either. I wouldn 't think my diet is an issue.

Go Ask Alice! on spastic colon (irritable bowel syndrome). That's just a wild guess, and might very well not have anything to do with pains you're getting after running for two minutes. But if you keep getting that pain, it would probably be worth discussing it with your doctor.

I usually get pains in my side when I'm dehydrated, usually after a night of drinking. Make sure you have plenty of water.

Hmmm...worth looking into.

You could have something there. I usually only run as a secondary exercise after doing a load of other exercise. I don't drink very much.I was considering whether it could have been due to lack of liquid but I wasn't sure.I will have a go. Thanks for confirming my ideas.Mr. Nuts

actually the way to stop that is when u breath, breath when u land on your left foot because you probably exhale when u lnad on tyour right foot so try and change your breathing methods. i read that in mens health.
