I'm having alot of problems with my bowels since I was around 12 years old . I'm sure that it is Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Does anyone have any herbal or alternative remedies that could help to releive this. I've been using Pepto Bismal to try to regulate it but it has adverse effects on me. Any input is greatly appreciated, thank you.

You really need to see a doctor first and try to make a positive diagnosis as to what the problem is. Then and only then should you try messing with alternative therapies.

How do you know for sure it's IBS, rather than an IBD, like Crohn's disease, or some other thing?

Hi, thanks for all your feedback. It got me thinking and decided to do a little more research into the symptoms that I have. In this search I compared IBS to IBD, and still came to the conclusion that I am almost positive it is IBS. I’d like to know some other treatments that people may have used so that when I do go to the docter (I am taking your guy’s advice on that one) I can say something about which treatment I wish to receive since most over the counter drugs have adverse effects on me. Anyways, just for informational purposes I will post what I’ve found on each of the three diseases…IBS Chron’s and ulcerative colitis, hopefully others will find it as useful as I did. IBS:Typically, people with IBS will have crampy abdominal pain along with gradual changes in their bowel pattern, often alternating between diarrhea and constipation. Furthermore, no significant abnormalities are seen upon examination of the colon. But those with ulcerative colitis have inflammation in the colon lining that can be seen by a doctor when the colon is examined, and this inflammation may lead to symptoms of diarrhea, but not usually constipation, and not always with abdominal pain. Another way that ulcerative colitis can be distinguished from IBS is that people with ulcerative colitis may have rectal bleeding, a symptom missing from IBSThese are the symptoms of Chron’s disease:• abdominal cramps or pain • diarrhea, sometimes with blood in the stool (bowel movements) • fever • weight loss may experience frequent diarrhea, intestinal ulcers, and problems in other parts of their bodies, such as inflammation of the joints, skin rashes, and eye problemsulcerative colitis:• tiredness • weight loss • loss of appetite • nausea Some people with ulcerative colitis may experience periods of time when they are free of symptoms (this is called remission) and other times when they feel sick (called relapse). Like Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis can be associated with problems in other parts of the body. These problems may include inflammation of the joints, eye problems, and anemia due to blood loss. Since I don’t show many of the important symptoms of either Chron’s or ulcerative colitisthis leads me to be almost positive that it is IBS…But you all are right, I should get it confirmed by an actual docter. (If you wish to learn more about these conditions, here are the web sites I used: http://www.kidshealth.org/teen/diseases_conditions/digestive/ibd.html http://www.living-better.com/understand_2.jsp http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=14621276&dopt=Abstract )

Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America also has some useful info.IBS is hard to figure out, if that's what you have. Some people seem to be sensitive to certain foods. You might try eliminating foods one at a time to see if your symptoms get better.
