A question for any doctors reading this...

My impression is that most doctors work like this now. The concept of the doctor who may be called out of bed in the middle of the night for an emergency may still possibly hold in some places, but most general practictioners here seem to work fixed hours, usually in multi-doctor clinics.

A lot, if not most, doctors see patients. I assume they are actually helping people, whether they're working shifts or 9-to-5. If you work in emergency medicine, there will be plenty of opportunity to work shifts, if you think that working shifts is somehow more helpful. As was mentioned, you can also be a staff doctor at a hospital; a hospital needs to have someone available around the clock for patients. Radiologists work all hours to deal with emergencies, and they make big bucks. You could also be a surgeon; a lot of the time they spend outside the operating room is on-call.There are also M.D.s who spend their lives in the lab, doing research, and I would say that they are also helping people, just not one-on-one.
