Others say that you shouldn't make your own distorted reality and live in a real one.

People sometimes "make realities" where they can evolve and progress, and some people "make realites" that are like cages. The point is that one should pay attention to the "reality he creates". Does it get him to where he wants to go?Then there's the issue of intention. When you do things, do you have a goal in mind, or are you just floating in the stream, getting pushed around by the currents? Sometimes it feels good to lie back and relax, but that might not be the most satisfying way to run a whole life.

I actually in the struggle of decieded between Nietzsche master slave theory about realities and then Elliott Smith's lyric "a distorted reality is a necessity to be free". So far I am leaning more towards Elliott Smith. What do you think?

There is no way that we can perceive objective reality, so we all live in a distorted one. I don't know what purpose it serves to wilfully distort it further, other than as a way to cope with pain.I'm not sure that, for day-to-day living, it's that helpful to get lost in the ideas of the great philosophers. (By the way, isn't the Master / Slave theory (about capital and labor) Hegel's?

I guess you could say that we all live in one seeing how we all have opinions. No it's not Hegels:"German philosopher who reasoned that Christianity's emphasis on the afterlife makes its believers less able to cope with earthly life. He argued that the ideal human, the Übermensch, would be able to channel passions creatively instead of suppressing them. His written works include Beyond Good and Evil (1886) and Thus Spake Zarathustra (1883–1892)."

Yes, I know Nietzsche is. For a while my sig was: "'Morality is the best of all devices for leading mankind by the nose.' -- Nietzsche" Nietzsche also said that Christianity is a religion for weak and unhealthy people. (You were referring to the master-morality and servant (slave)-morality thing.
I'm no advocate of the philosopy that a good live consists of planning for a good death. I'm more concerned about life in the here-and-now. There are people who would benefit from throwing off the yoke of death cult thinking.
We're getting pretty far off on a tangent here, though. The idea for this thread is that one shouldn't just exists, being passive while being pushed around by events.
