Sometimes when I'm running I get a pain in my right shoulder, is this normal?

Pain in right shoulder

I used to get the same kind of thing when I was young, but the pain was in the front, deep, just below the bottom of the collar bone_. I think there's a big artery down there somewhere. Never did figure out what it was.

It only happened when I exercised vigorously (which meant running). My arms weren't swinging wildly or anything like that. Maybe it was a referred pain from somewhere else because of poor posture? Maybe the heavily-pulsing artery didn't have enough space to expand?I never had any problems with the muscles or joints in the shoulder (until more recently, when a New York subway car door closed on my shoulders, and did a number on the left one...bastard 7 train).

Helms has already covered what I was going to say, but it definitely sounds like a rotator cuff problem. I have the exact same thing. The most important thing is to do a warm up and loosen your shoulders every time before you run and afterwards (and preferably also at home so you're doing in at least once a day). I do multiple arm and shoulders stretches and it made the difference between the pain being sharp and uncomfortable and not feeling the pain at all. The problem with running is it moves the arms back and forth repetitively but doesn't really stretch out the shoulders, just causes repeated stress on tendons and ligaments over a small range of movement. That link that Helms gave should have the stretches you should do beforehand and at home.

Woops, I didn't realize that those were the new ad links on this site. Here's a site with some good ones http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/back/shoulder/rotator/rotatstretch.php
