So ladies and gentlemen, whats the dealio?

Cheney-Specter Bill
-
Basically, the administration was illegally spying on Americans (because they weren't getting the warrants they were supposed to be getting. Instead of calling the president to task for doing that, the toothless Congress is instead attempting to pass legislation that legalizes the illegal spying. The problem is that they can't really do thay, unless the 4th Amendment of the Constution's Bill of Rights is repealed (which says that the goverment is restricted from carrying out illegal searches and seizures). It's a "blank check for spying" that "mocks freedom" and is "nothing short of a complete capitulation to the Bush administration", according to some editorial writers. The Smirking Chimp site call the bill worse than the Patriot Act.

I think thats the same article that I just read on www.oregonlive.comSo, is there any chance of them suceeding?

Why did they even suggest it? I would think it rediculous for something like that to be allowed to pass.

Not too many people are pleased that the administration is doing this. I don't think many people have any idea what's going on. Unfortunately, even if they did, so many Americans care more about their safety than their freedom. If the U.S. sustained the kind of terrorism that Israel does, the U.S. would have become a total police state long ago. Americans have become timid. The sad irony is that giving up their rights is doing nothing to increase their security. The administration's attutude is, "We can't tell you anything, but trust us, we're good people.""Trust us" indeed. They don't know the difference between a nation of laws and rule by a demagogue, and they don't care.

Why did they even suggest it?Why does a dogs lick their balls? In both cases, the answer is, "Because they can." The president (Cheney, actually) wants to concentrate as much power in the executive as possible. George Washington would be appalled; King George would have been sympathetic; I'm not sure that George Bush understands that if Hillary Clinton wins the next presidential election, she will have all those powers. You'd think that that would chill the Republicans to the bone.
