Ok so Im moving, not far, just up the street actually, a move that I hope to have accomplished by sunday afternoon and wont actually start till Saturday morning. I have Cable Internet, I called the bastards fthey went ot schedule my change of service address, fand said they cant because some lives there and you cant have it set up that way, the computer wont allow it. I tell them the situation, the fucking morons tell me that i have to wait until the people living there move, wich they are doing today and tommorrow, then I have to wait for them to move thier cable account to a new address. After that i can change my cable over, but it takes 3 to 4 weeks for the actual change to take affect.Because I have cable net, the current owners dont, fI cant jsut use my modem there, they must come install some shit in the cable box outside. So looking into other options and telling the cable company to go fuck a goat and threatening to piss on thier windows and write warnings to the public in my own feces, I decided a few things.1 I fucking hate DSL2 No matter what DSL service I get it all comes thru Qwest Communications, and I jsut pay it to different companys. Years ago I went 100% wireless and told Qwest to rip thier shit out of my house, when they showed up to disconnect me I threw thema bundle of wire and the phone jacks from inside my house and told them to stuff it in thier ass, so I REFUSE to use Qwest ever again.3 fSatellie Net is available here. The tower is actually about 100 yards from my door.MY fiance is a techie, she has certs falling out her hot little ass and is in college taking a degree in computers as well as currently being in some training from her work to get a cert for networking, she is of no help to me on this, WHile she knows most off the shit I fuck up on my network, she has no idea about wireless service. so my question all this rambling leads up to is How does wireless service compare to cable ?I already know ill have a higher speed then I do now, but are there any disadvantages ? Cost isnt one of htem, its actually 20 bucks cheapera month then Im paying now.Is there anything I should know ? any extra equipment i need to buy to keep shit running right ? In all of this Im really countin gon Steve and Wally to give me the answers I need. I got a buddy who does the shit for a living, 6 years of college and to many certs to remember, but hes back home this weak for the death of his mom so I really dont want to call his cell up asking stupid shit while hes dealing with that. And should I disapear for a week or so, it doesnt mean that someone finally got sick of my mouth and killed me (sorry to disapoint you all )its jsut the delay in my net service being installed.

wireless, like cable and DSL has it's environmental limmitations.Years ago, they tested cable vs DSL in the lab under controlled conditions. With all things being equal, they found DSL to be faster. But we all know in the real world that sometimes it is and sometimes it isn'tSame with wireless. Weather, solar flares and EM noise can seriously make it suck. The other big problem that people are finding with both wireless internat as wireless bridges in private networks is that the frequenceis most commonly used are unlicenced. That just meands that you don't need to register with the CRTC of FCC to broadcast on thos frequencies. What happens then is that you can have a system that works quite hapily until some guy sets up a wifi bridge to connect to his office accross town. Same frequency but more power... suddenly your connection is totally drown.Fibre to the home!!!! that's all I ask. Shit, I even have enough fibre on a spool in my basement to get me to the closest pedistal

The good thing is i live in a semi private community, built around a golf course, built around a lake. The only business here aside from teh golf course is the swimming pool, and the maverik that sells gas and overinflated over priced bread and milk and drinks. The tower is actually between me and the maverik, with the golf course and swimming pool being south west of me. aside form that, its all homes and town is 12 miles in one direction, and 20 minutes in the other so Im doubting anyone will bother using that same signal to set up a wireless bridge. My home network is 100% wireless, aside from the cable coming in to the house and my fiances computer that is onthe same desk as the router.Todate, never a problem with signal strength or loss of signal or being drown out, but I have been able to hitch on the people next doors signal and go thru their connection if I fam in the garagef rather then a room in the house. I still get my network there, but fI was looking at shit one day and found that i had another network as an option so I jumped on it and looked around a bit.Its not my fault they dont pretect thier network with a password, besides Iv met them, I think they woyuld use password as a password, just not real bright people to begin with. However hes doing something right, ffhes living with a rather hot chic, and her girl ffriend and iff the sounds that come thru my bedroom wall are an indication, he is fucking them both.SOrta creepy since the upstairs master bath shares the same wall, Im nevre alone when I shit or shower, I listen to them fuck, fart, shit, and sing if Im on that side of my befroom.I dont know its good or bad to move and not have to listen to it anymore, its provided alot of entertainment.

Satellite? I thought it was really exensive, and had huge latency (noticeable if you're doing live 2-way audio or video). How about celluar data service? Sprint and Verizon are probably the best at the moment. You can get a router that takes a cellular modem card that has WiFi and Ethernet, just like an ordinary router. It's kind of expensive, and it's not as fast as DSL or cable modem, but it's not bad. When you go on your honeymoon, you can power the router off your car battery and have a WiFi access point on wheels.

I took Cisco courses, but I forgot what it's called. Are those the Dishes that need line of sight?
-
Its not too bad, free install, first month free, I get dropped to only 5 email accounts but I have more then that on comcast and dont use but one of them. Im looking into the wifi idea and the sprint stuff, I wont be taking a computer of any kind with me on the honeymoon though, why inerupt a good time with real life and the internet? I dont want ot be able to be gotten ahold of for those days let alone be checking email. My sat internet is 20 dollars cheaper then cable. My brother has it, loves it, 3 peoeple that live near me have it and love it.None of htem have any tech capability though, they know its fast and they turn on the computer and it works, Im savy enough to know theres more shit to consider as far as perfomrance.and as far as the honeymoon, if I did take teh laptop along, most hotels offer highspeed net with a room, or atleast the ones i prefer to stay in do.Fuck this, too many random toughts, far to tired to discuss anything that takes brains right now, must sleep !Ill catch up fon this thread when I get some time tomorrow

Interesting. I've seen wardriving antennas before, but none that you're talking about.
-
You can make a high-gain WiFi antenna from a Pringles potato chip can (search the Web).
-
Yeah, I found out about the pringles can thing a while back. I was into wardriving back then. Take some coax cable and a satellite dish, like a direcTV dish, and you can make a pretty long range antenna with it.
