Much of my short life was spent in front of a TV screen, whether or not I was watching the simpsons, or playing mario I seemed to never get away from that horribly designed couch of mine. Now years later, I have a new outlook on life, I've left the couch, got myself in shape, and got out of the house. However those years of sitting on that couch and bad posture took it's toll, I found out in 8th grade that I had a curvature of the spine, and after being referred to a back specialist I was told that my life would be a living hell. Well it wasn't, I seemed to go about my business without it bothering me all that much, I kept my back straight as I could, and although I would get the occasional ache, It wasn't all that often. However lately It's been a different story, I don't know what it is, but my back has started to hurt all the time. This last summer I really busted my butt to get in shape, I lost about 20 pounds, and I was led to believe that any weight loss would help in my back pain, but it's been the opposite. I whent from around 186 to around 162 pounds, and my back feels horrible. I don't know if it's the sit ups I have been doing all summer long, or maybe it's some other exercise. My workout mainly consists of cardio mixed with push ups and sit ups, around 60 each. I have a strict diet, and I get plenty of vitamens. I don't know what is causing this sudden back pain, but It's certainly not something I have felt before. I was told I would suffer from back pain, but I never imagined it would set in so quick, I'm only 17, I keep my back straight to the best of my ability, and this has never happened before. I was further alerted to problems the other day, when I had my shirt off and my mom told me I had a knot on my back, I reached back there and sure enough I could feel my back pone protruding out, it's rather uncomfortable because my back bone rubs against the hard backed chairs at my school, causing irritation and even more pain. I havn't been keeping up with modern medicine, is there any procedures that can be done to correct back's curvature?Any suggestions?

My parents have been pressuring me to give up sit ups, claiming that it must be leading to my back pain. I do have an abnormal curvature of the spine, do you think sit ups or push ups would have any harmful effect on that?

I have a doctors appointment this thursday, so I should know something then.

Actually come to think of it, my back doesn't hurt all that much untill I start to play my guitar. I don't know if that helps pinpoint the issue, but I think that position might be the cause of my problem. Any recomendations?

Sitting or standing? Acoustic or electric? I assume sitting. If sitting, I'll bet your slumping, or your pelvis is rotated pretty far forward. Holding a guitar can put you in a pretty bad posture if you're not thinking about your body.

Get a better strap! If your using an Solid body, you need to get a leather adjustable Fender strap. that way, it can suite your posture! If its acoustic, just dont slouch. That really bugs me! Theres a special way to hold a guitar, Follow it!! I've had the same problems in my beginner years, just hold it like a classical! all the pain is gone, after a while.

I've been playing for around 2 years and it's only bothering me now, I don't understand why.I'll try to correct my posture, but remember I have an abnormal back and as such I don't know how well I can apply these techniques.

Then it isn't the guitar, if its starting now and you've been playing for 2 years, you should know most of the stuff.there is probaly an even more serious cause, you should let a more experience member help you
