Is it possible to sweat out a fever? My family always has this technique of taking a cold shower or sweating out a fever and surprisingly it worked. But only when I was younger. I've been having stomach pains and high fevers for almost a week now. The highest it's gone to is 102 which was friday. today it's been off and on between 101 and 100. I'm freezing and everyone thinks I'm nuts walking around in sweats. but it's cold to even move which sucks because I get up every five seconds to throw up in the bathroom. I'm not sure what to do. I've checked with the doctor and he said I might have the flu but there's a "likelihood" I don't.

You can't sweat out a fever. Usually with a mild virus fever your body can be left to cure itself. Don't wrap yourself up too much, but cold showers aren't necessary. Make sure you drink lots of water, especially if you're also vomiting - sip water throughout the day. With a high fever you do need to get the temperature down. Aspirin or acetaminophen or similar mild analgesics also have anti-fever properties, and cool showers can help.

You can't sweat out a fever. IDK.. Sweating out a fever is an 'Old Wives' remedy... My mom did it to me when I was young and it worked pretty well.

Can you explain what it means to "sweat out" a fever? You mean wrap yourself up in sweatshirts and blankets?
Your body cranks up the temperature to make it harder for bacteria and viruses to reproduce inside you (they reproduce best, usually, at normal body temperature, which allows them to make you sick in the first place). I suppose raising your body temperature even further might make you an even less hospitable host for nasty pathogens, but I'd worry about too much heat interfering with your immune system.
But automatically taking aspirin, iburprophen, Tylenol, or neproxin might not be the best idea...although there are times that it is definitely appropriate, especially if your temperature goes way high.

Yeah.. my mom would put me on the sofa with towels and blankets wrapped around me like in a cocoon. Hands and everything inside. You would end up sweating profusly. Of course mom would be there to give me drinks through a straw whenever I yelled. The heat, sweating and constriction can be unnerving though. But after an hour or so (if you can take it), you feel great and the fever is gone. Take a nice shower afterwards and you are practically ready to go.
If I remember well, this was described in the book Tom Sawyer (maybe Huck Finn?), where his aunt scrubbed him till he was raw and then wrapped him in sheets to sweat it out.

But after an hour or so (if you can take it), you feel great and the fever is gone. That is a bit hard to believe. You'd think hospitals would have figured it out by now. I suspect it's one of those things that seems effective...until carefully scrutinized. In any case, it can be very dangerous if it makes your temperature go up too high. Convulsions are not healthy. NetDoctor (UK):In reply to:Body temperatureYou do not sweat out a fever. If your child shivers while their temperature is rising, it's okay to cover them with a duvet or a blanket. But as soon as your child's temperature has stabilised and he or she starts sweating, they need to cool down.Your child only needs to wear underwear or a nappy, which will help the heat escape from the body. Make sure their room is ventilated and cool, but not draughty. Interesting information on fever from the Boston Globe.(I don't think a lot of research has been done on the "sweat out a fever" idea...at least, I haven't found it.)

I didn't read the article below. I don't have the time now. All I know is that it helped. Naturally, you don't want the temp to get too high for too long and may be a reason why the medical community doesn't condone it. (How do you measure too high for too long?) But we shouldn't be so quick to cast off the "old wives" remedies. Of course there are things that don't hold water, but there are some that probably work.

Somebody ought to do some research. The problem is that there's no profit in doing research like that.
