Dead Lift

Why are dead lifts considered a back exercise? I always feel it in my legs a lot more than my back, and often skip it if my legs are still hurting from my leg's day.

ok , thanks helms

As Helms said deads and squats are considered "full body exercises" and are both are very similar exercises in that the main focus is on the legs, lower back and to some extent the upper back. A good way to train both lifts is to alternate them - do deads and then wait 3-5 days or maybe even a week and then do squats - i.e.alternate squats and deads every other week. For me, personally, doing both in the same workout is too much, that is if you are hoisting challenging poundages. If you are tall and have long arms you will probably be able to hoist alot of weight (relative to the other lifts where long limbs are not very helpful) so you must be very careful not to overdo deads. Years ago when I first started lifting I was amazed to work up to a 270 pound deadlift even though my squat was only around 200 or so and my bench was maybe 150 - this led to great enthusiasm for the deadlift and many years of chronic overtraining before I understood what overtraining was. Now I am a little bit smarter and hardly ever max out on deads - you can really do in your lower back and thus your entire nervous system and actually set yourself back. Some lifters do deads every other week or even only once a month depending on the poundages you are using. If you want to get similar stimulation try power cleans (more of an explosive, athletic move and by necessity must use lighter weights) as part of your regular workout and then every so often do some deads.Hope this helps.

Heres a moving sample if the description Helms offered didn't make it completely clear:

Aw shucks thanks Helms! 'spect! A natural lifter capable of benching 385 gets my utmost. Cheers.

Holy sh*t, incredibly awesome! What is your bodyweight and height?

At that time I was 240 - 242 (and not on "the gear") and I'm still 5'8". That is what I believe is referred to as a "fireplug" physique! Very impressive! We come from two opposite ends of the spectrum as I am 6'2" and despite always being on the skinny side (I was 156 when I first started lifting) at one time I worked and ate my way up to around 240. Currenty only around 210 due to some medical issues (trying to overcome this darned Graves disease - overactive thyroid). Never ever even gave a thought to 'roids! At one time I could barely deadlift what you bench which makes your bench all the more mind-blowing to me, but my bench has always sucked (Excuse: long arms, shallow chest, blah, blah, blah, yeah, that's it...snipf!)I am trying to get back to respectable size and lifts whilst keeping my waist at or below 38. Even at 50 I believe I still have some lifts in me. I would like to total 1200 with a 400 squat, 300 bench, and 500 deadlift.
