I have read in various places that it is possible to increase your matabilism. I just wondered if there is anything to these claims, and if anyone knows how to speed it up.Mine's quite slow. I don't eat that much but I seem to put weight on really easily. So I just wondered. Thanks for your help!

Metabilism...

's a bit tricky to mess around with metabolism and probably above the scope of an internet forum. I can tell you the little that I know from past experience and my own research.First of all you must rule out any medical issues such as hypo-thyroid (underactive thyroid) or other such conditions. This is a simple blood test that your primary physician can do. Personally I have always had a very fast metabolism with the exact opposite symptoms you describe - difficulty in gaining weight, etc - and it wasn't until some years ago I finally discovered I suffer from Graves Disease (hyper - or overactive thyroid) for which I now take medication.Barring any medical conditions I have heard that KELP (supplement available in most health food stores) which contains iodine can speed up metabolism by stimulating the thyroid and there are other items on the market that tout losing weight by taking supplements that speed up metabolism - but once again you must be very careful. For example Ephedra I believe was pulled off the market due to health concerns.Adjust your workouts/training according to your metabolism - i.e., get more cardio as it has a lasting effect that burns calories for many hours afterwards - but learn to do cardio workouts properly - that is getting within your target heart rate for a certain amount of time, etc. Also I have read that eating a diet higher in protein causes the body to burn more calories. You will probably have to do some research into this topic but be prepared for lots of conflicting opinion and tread carefully. Remember that alot of these "miracle" supplements are of very little, if any, value at all. IMO it is always best to try to address this type of problem naturally if possible.
