Why might that be? Perhaps because you have no idea what it means to believe in something greater than yourself? And I'm willing to bet there are many things greater than you--given your attitude in this thread, I'd rather step in a steaming pile of elephant shit up to my knee rather than spend a moment in your company...I would consider that greater by a mile.Okay, I'm not some fanatical supporter of the current US president or his policies, but I've worn the same uniform in which many US soldiers are currently dying because they, too, believe in something greater: that NO ONE has the right to come into our country and kill innocent men, women and children with impunity. For those men and women in uniform, not to mention the survivors of those who died on 9/11, it has absolutely nothing to do with George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld or any of their cronies it has to do with that GREATER BELIEF. If you don't live in the US and think of visiting...don't bother--we don't need you; if you do live in the US and don't like it, I'll be happy to show you the way out...apparently there's at least one person in Canada who actually WOULD cross the street to piss on you if you were burning.Have a wonderful day.

Thanks for the lovely comment. And nope, I've got no sense of pride or anything. As a member of the Armed Forces, I just wear my uniform for the discounts.I don't like the phrase cause its another example of mixing religion with State affairs. Its rediculous that the government of one of the worlds most culturally diverse nations not only mixes itself with religious beliefs, but it focuses on just one religion in particular. Political officials believing in God is one thing, but running a country on religious ideals is ignorant. You can run a country with good will towards all people and so forth without having to even mention God.
-
Guess like you know nothing of Colonial America. Congrats!
-
I know it pretty well actually, but this isn't the 18th century.
-
Then what you said before, didn't make sense! If you did know it! Riddle of the Sphinx!
-
Yes it does make sense. I'm talking about here in the 21st century, over 200 years later. Christianity is not like the Bill of Rights or the constitution, it can be removed without the country exploding.
-
It's ALL Gods! Not just the Christian god. Jeez. It's a big part of their heritage and history!
-
Whoops, "Christianity" was a mistake on my part, I meant religion.I am aware that religion is important to a lot of people and it will not be removed from the American government in my lifetime and I am not going to make any effort to do so, its not my place to do so. I am under no illusion of that. All I am stating is my opinion that it serves no purpose and like the monarchy in Britain, getting rid of it wouldn't be a great loss.

-
Has society in U.K gone mad?Why do you people even use the Queen anymore? Like, whats the need of the prime minister there? JeezMonarchy IS over. I don't get this country either, once they want independece, next, they wanna give a hug to the Fatherland!Atleast, America has the balls! Rev. War

Well if you're asking me personally I can't help you, I don't live in the UK.

General Question.

bob, I've got on people for turning threads into personal arguments, so my apologies--to ALL--for getting heated, previously.I now see where you're going with your thought process, and I think I understand a little better your objection. Personally, I'm not a fan of organized religion--probably because I was raised catholic--but that's a different topic altogether (and if you wish to get into a theological debate, let me know, post a thread and I'll gladly be there, probably supporting you). What it comes down to, where this thread is concerned, is the beliefs upon which this country was founded. Oh, I know, they've been warped, twisted and are probably completely outdated by now--and for those who think I'm being obtuse, yes, I realize the founding fathers who wrote the constitution were slave owners--but that doesn't change the fact that there are people that, apparently, you and I both know who wear a uniform everyday and go out and get shot at and die because of the ideals those hypocrites 200+ years ago put on paper. It's not about those long-dead men...and it's not about God...it's about freedom to walk down the street without worrying that some asshole who thinks HIS god is better than YOUR god is going to blow up you and your loved ones because you happen to live where you do. "One nation, under God"? Whose? Yours? Mine? Abdullah Akbar's? Doesn't matter a fucking bit. BUT...I believe in the principles on which this country was founded and if someone wants to attribute all the theoretical goodness associated with those ideals to an unknown possibly mythic creation, well, it makes no difference to me....I just don't want to get blown up or watch the people I love blown up and I will respect and remember with fondness all those whose lives were lost so I didn't--and don't--have to.And one more thing: as you obviously object to any spoken or written reference to God where our nation is concerned, please feel free to send me all the cash you have since it all says "In God We Trust" on it! I'll be more than happy to dispose of those offensive items for you

Actually, all my money says Éire on them, so you're not getting a cent!
