I used to smoke a little bit, barely ever inhaled, only once, about 16 months ago (Im 14 now, i was 13). I coughed up a luing and thought i messed up or something. I only recently realized, Doh, that was supposed to happen. Today, was my first real smoke, pretty much ever, I was taking a drag or two from some of the kids in my high school. (There are only 15 or so in my private school.) Well, I have probably had about 6 butts or so in total today, from accumalated hits from all my buddies. Im sitting here typing, spitting a lot, and wondering, can someone tell me how the hell to not smoke outside of school? Right now, I would really like a butt, however no one will sell them to me. Any clues on how to control craving for cigarettes?

Help with Smoking
-
Hmm... Thank you Helsman  I will take your advice. Or attempt to.
-
I've given some anti smoking advice on here before, maybe you'll find it if you do a serch, some of it was not so long ago. I dont want to get into it all again, except to say I'm a heavy smoker, I get through about 175/250 cigarettes a week, depending if I go out on the weekend or not.I'm thirty and know I am killing myself with this addiction. If I do not manage to kick it, I'm pretty sure it'll be the reason that I die, long before my time most likely. My strongest advice would be to stop before you end up like me . I was fourteen when I lit my first cigarette. I was given this same advice at fourteen and ignored it. How I wish I hadnt..
-
You might want to very seriously revisit quitting, for the sake of your children. The parents set the example.
-
Look, no offense or anything, but if you have a few cigarettes in a day, you aren't just addicted like that. I smoked 4 a day the entire week, followed by half a deck (10) yesterday. None for me today, and I'm fine. The whole addiction thing is all mental, regain control of your mind. And think if you're doing it to seem like you have a problem to "fit in".
-
Actually my attempts to quit have been, and are, ongoing; but I'm not going to get into a personal issue with you Steve. Thanks for the advice.

It's not clear from your post if this is the first week that you've smoked, of if you are a regular smoker. If it's your first week, you should know that it takes about three weeks of regular ingestion of nicotine for the physical addiction to kick in. This the same time-span, incidentally, as heroin. If you are a regular smoker, and you believe you are not addicted, can you tell me why it is that you continue to smoke?
-
It is only my 2nd week smoking. I dont have an actualy physical addiction it seems, its more of a mentality thing i cant get over.
-
People who start very young (like you) have a very difficult time quitting later in life. That's why you are so valuable to the tobacco companies. How does it feel, being a tool?
-
If you're already craving cigarettes then the physical addiction has already begun to take hold, weather you realise it or not. You dont have long to get out of this before you're well and truly hooked. If you regard this as a problem for another day you're fooling yourself. I'm only saying this because I dont want another young person to become strung out on nicotine if there's any possibility something I say might stop that happening. Do you think this problem will go away on its own? When I lit my first cigarette at fourteen I didnt plan to smoke twentyfive a day for the next sixteen years. Nobody does.
Ask yourself honestly, do you want to end up like me?
-
I don't think it is a physical addiction yet, more of a habitual thing. I am saying that because I can't fathom you being addicted so quick. Like everyone said QUIT!! I mean you go to nice bars and stuff most guy/girls wont even talk to ya if you smoke and I can't blame them. If you are a non-smoker it is like licking an ashtray when you kiss a smoker. I am semi blessed because I only crave them when I drink and boy do I. Makes me feel like shit the next day when I smoke a lot, ontop of the hangover I already aquired. When your friends are smoking let them have at it, and when they ask you if you want a drag just say naaaa I'm strait. Most TRUE friends won't pester you about it and if they do, they are only wanting to bring you down with them, so they don't feel as guilty. Alright enough yappin from me.
-
You cant fathom it because you havent experinced it. Addiction occurs in just a short few weeks when the substance is ingested regularly every day. Sporadic use like yours will take much longer to result in dependency, but it will result in it in the end, so you need to watch out yourself. Please, really, it's not helpful to give inaccurate information on something as serious as chemical dependency. And Helmsman, God you've just made me feel so bad, ha ha. I was just sparking up a cigarette when I read that! I do struggle to get free every few weeks or months, it is a nightmare. As I've said before, it is genuinely more difficult than kicking cocaine. The longest I've ever gone was one month. I always go cold turkey, I have no time for substitutes. I suppose it is time to do battle again. I will let you all know when I'm ready for round whatever, I've lost count.
-
LMAO...that "FUN WITH STEAK" toon! It's the way the guy on the left keeps up that stupid smile until "POW!"
-
Each battle you do, starfish, is an opportunity to learn about what to do and what not to do the next time you do battle. Then, one day, the fight will be yours. BTW, I quit both cold-turkey and with a substitute. A substitute helps you in more ways than one...you can focus on something else other than the cigarettes, so there is a psychological edge they give, too. I was back to smoking after going cold-turkey within a couple months. I'm four months down the road (after finishing using a substitute) and I'm not looking back. Screw pride and what others think...if a substitute works better for me, I'm using it.

I think the funniest thing is the way he smiles that silly smile after he gets the smack in the face, like he has something to be smiling about. I laughed the first time I saw that too. Thanks for responding on the smoking issue. I find it helpful to talk to former smokers. It's not a matter of pride on the NRT issue, I believe from past experince that substitutes make quitting harder for me, not easier. If they work for other people, fine. All NRT did for me was to draw out the withdrawls. I dont know how bad yours were, but I suffer terrible cramps in my jaws that drive me mad. Did you experience anything physical like that?
-
A good idea is to busy your time with something else. Go outside and get some fresh air, play a videogame, watch a movie or read a book. Hell if you want to get some chewing gum.
-
I don't give innacurate information...j/k. Everyone has their .02 including the "experts", but you said it yourself, dependency is not likely in such sporatic use. Trust me I have been there in many ways, so this .02 is comming from experience. Don't be so quick to judge and discredit another's input. Have you ever watched someone so desperate for a smoke that they collected used chewing tobacco off the ground or trash, so they can dry it out and smoke it to get their fix? This is just one example I deal with everyday and we are only talking about nicotine. Smoking starts out as a habit or social act but can turn into a physical dependency. I am lucky because of my ability fight urges with mind over matter and I have my demons just like the next guy/gal that aren't so easy to control, so I understand.Whoa, I am going to stop my ADD rambling now, but on here you will get lots of advice and different opinions. You are looking at words not faces so don't say someones advice is bad because you do not agree, you really don't know the wisdom of the source. On that note here are some quotes that help me in life "The words of truth are always paradoxical." "If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading." Lao Tzu
-
I never said your advice was "bad", simply inaccurate, which it is, as you've told somebody it is not possible to get addicted to nicotine in two weeks. You are wrong on that point. Would you feel good about the advice you'd given if he continued to smoke on the basis of your advice and developed a nicotine dependency that ended in cancer or heart disease, as happens to one in four smokers? Also I never said that addiction was unlikely as a result of sporadic use, just that it takes longer for the chemical addiction to take hold. Fool yourself if you like. Your own addiction is in the post, it's just not travelling first class.
-
Wow! My addiction is in the post? oook...... Where did I say anything about not being addicted in 2 weeks? I didn't say anything of the sort, I said I can't fathom you getting addicted so quick, like where the poster said my FIRST real cigerette. I was referring to having ONE cigerette. Then you said how would I feel bla bla, I do believe I stressed the part about agreeing with everyone and that was to STOP smoking. Holy SNAP! Where the hell did I encourage this kat to smoke? I embrace constructive criticism, but atleast make it about something I said. I am not going to even go on. Head butting ego's is stupid as it is and the last place I want to do it is on the internet. Fuck I guess every forum has to have a troll.

Ah shut up or I'll give you a bang of my steak..
