Nah, I never really kept up with local politics predating the 90s. Now it's true that there's a certain amount of dislike towards Quebec/Ontario, as Alberta often feels ignored and has some separatist movements.Saying Albertans don't like the French is a major bias. Now saying Albertans don't like people who can't speak good English is a little closer, but that applies just about everywhere in Canada outside Ontario, Quebec, and Vancouver. But honestly, anyone could get a job here. There are businesses closing down in some areas, particularily small towns, because they can't keep employees due to the pull of oil field work which pays more for entry level labour than many long term careers pay well-settled middle aged individuals. That and the trades make tons of money with the massive housing and services boom that accompany lots of jobs and big increases in population. Now I doubt Bush will attack, but the fact that Alberta has a Conservative government and will almost inevitably stay that way, along with having a conservative federal government, means we'll be all buddy buddy with Bush. Calgary has one or two liberal seats I believe and Edmonton is primarily non-conservative, but all of rural Alberta votes Conservative and due to technicalities and bullshit they have more ridings that represent smaller populations than the city ridings. I hate local politics because the conservative party is basically the only party that ever makes it for this province and this is why we're becoming more and more privatized with fewer social programs all the time. Oh, but it's fine, because we have oil and that's pumping lots of money into the economy and will always be there anyways sarcasm Oh, and when you hear our government is rich because of oil, it's a lie. We make more off of gambling taxes than oil, because we're the least taxed area in the world for companies to get oil from.

Police equality?
-
Yes. The sepratists movement was kinda big. I don't think all of Alberta hate Quebec, but it just seems like it. Fortunatly, I don't live in Quebec. Yup, no Gilles Duceppe propoganda!Alberta is the richest provice! We need that oil. Let's get back on topic here!

"The bottom line is that people trust people who reflect them, physically and ideologically"
But why should that be acceptable Sexpot? Surely people ought trust a police force that is made up of people who are capable of doing the job put before them, regardless of ethnicity or any other communal factor?
I can tell you, if I were caught up a dark alley having my handbag stolen and my clothes torn off I wouldn't give any sort of hairies who apprehended these fuckers in that moment as long as they were strong and capable and, above all, on the job asap!
My point is that I don't give a damn who the arresting officer is. Surely you cant maintain that any women black/white would give a damn if the arresting officer was from another race?
At the end of it all, I want the person best placed to perform their duties assigned to that job, and it is in the best interests of society that that person is placed in that position, race irrespective.

if a white women doesn't get hired but a man or a black woman does, she immediatly thinks it's sexist or racist.Racist?> My dad hired the black woman, and the white woman already started complaining of discrimination and everything! and all this Habeas Corpus and Affermitive Action garbage came up.The white woman is fighting affirmative action because the black woman was hired?I thought that habeas corpus was the right to petition the government when they lock you up.None of what you said makes much sense.
-
I"m not the best on Law. I've just heard that term, alot. The black girl still has the job. So, it's all good. The R.I.M still had to pay the white girl some settlement though.
I wonder if I can get discriminated against. You don't hear much of the white males getting discriminated agaisnt...
-
> The R.I.M still had to pay the white girl some settlement though.
Based on what? The story is completely pointless without the details.
> I wonder if I can get discriminated against. You don't hear much of the white males getting discriminated agaisnt...
Since white guys do most of the hiring, it's not likely that you'd get discriminated against.
-
wow, a punk wanting to become a cop...

In reply to:

Yep, that's the gist of it. Nothing to do with affirmative action/discrimination/whatever.
-
"Since white guys do most of the hiring, it's not likely that you'd get discriminated against"That is a good point. Would somebody mind explaining what affirmitive action is as it relates to north American society. I'm assuming it is a drive for racial inclusion?Do women and racial minorities on here not think there is something insulting about the idea of being handed a job on the basis of race/gender? I dont want my gender to fast-track me anythere, the implication there is that I would be unable to get there on my own steam and have to be handed the chance because my gender has rendered me incapable. I'm surprised more people dont see anything to be offended about here.
-
Basically, affirmative action is giving preferential treatment to members of aggrieved minority groups. This JoeBloggs is well worth a read.

Isn't there an objective way to measure Oprah's success? Like television ratings and book sales? She has a sales job. You judge her by how much product she sells. If she got lousy ratings, she'd be off the air, no matter what you say about her.> If they had wanted a man, it wouldn't have happened for her.Who is they? What counts is what the viewers want. They are apparently getting what they want.
-
I thought Unsupervised said this already but w/e.Affirmitive Action is DISCRIMINATION German:UnterscheidungSpanish: DiscriminaciónItalian: DiscriminazionePortugues: DiscriminaçãoI hope that better helps.

lol that's so funny because now that I think about it, most of the caucasians in my city are police officers. Of course my city is very culturally diverse but yeah you don't see too many "ethnic" police officers. My school is right around the corner from a police station. I don't know who said that people feel better seeing their own. I'm actually quite comfortable with the caucasian male officers in my neighborhood... besides the fact I know most of them lol. But according to my sister's city... I would never want to be a police officer because then I'd be the most hated person next to George Bush. Police officers can be quite violent, at least now a days they are. They could care less of how you look and whether you're a guy or gal. They have new... weapons so now they think they're extra cool.
-
Yes, the technical definition of "discrimination" is met. But is discrimination necessarily bad?
-
Yes! Anyone one can tell you that ^.^. Once you experience it, youll see its bad!
-
Let's say a company says they're only going to hire new college grads with at least 3.5 GPA (out of 4). Should the folks of all shades who graduate with a 3.4 be upset about the unfairness of it all?Did you bother reading this post?

In reply to:Equality RightsEquality before and under law and equal protection and benefit of law 15. (1) Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.Affirmative action programs (2) Subsection (1) does not preclude any law, program or activity that has as its object the amelioration of conditions of disadvantaged individuals or groups including those that are disadvantaged because of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability. Canadian Charter of Rights and FreedomsI'm talking about this!
-
What are you talking about? Affimative action is enshrined in the charter. It looks like it's completely legal in Canada. I presume it was mostly white guys who made it so.
-
Oooookay....excuse me while I adjust my aluminum foil hat. It's the only thing keeping the aliens from pwning my brain.Doesn't Oprah have her own production company (Harpo Productions)? It sounds to me like she's a businessperson with her own company who has syndicated here show to local TV stations, who make money with it selling commercial advertising. If they couldn't sell commercials, they wouldn't run the show. The local TV station owners generally have their own shareholders (or corporate parents) to report to.I'm not defending the tastes of the public (which seems to really like reality shows), but there it is.

Read this: http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/cb98-176.html (I'm just using the US as an example because you guys are mostly Americans/Canadians)African Americans are taken from their home country and then economically raped. If something was to happen like that nowadays there would be HELL to pay. But instead you guys would rather that we all just be "treated equally".I'm sorry, but don't you think you should fix the damage which your ancestors caused? Boo fucking hoo, someone gets your place in a school and his/her grade is .1 lower than yours. I know here in NZ, where Maori/Pacific Islanders are allowed into Med school on slightly lower grades, they perform just as well as their white counterparts. Then once they get out into the community they form a broader base of doctors who reflect the community. If you want to go on blabbing about how it's so unfair that this person got in ahead of you, then go ahead. It shows that you have no social conciousness whatsoever.Maybe instead you could make a deal. How about you wipe 40% of your parents income and start life over again. You can grow up in the household struggling to get by. Or instead, if you don't want to grow up like the average black person, then keep your 40% and work just a little bit harder, you'll get into the school/police/whatever anyway.Stop your fucking moaning.
