to use "to have got" for "to have"It may be common, but the "got" sure seems not to serve a purpose [note: now it's acceptable to split infinitives...at least by a short distance]. In American English, people will thow in the "got" to add emphasis: "I have got to go!", or even, "Gotta go!" I prefer "I hafta go!", or just "Later!"You'd think that the natural evolution of language would be toward simplicity. English is a chaotic language.

I guess languages tend to become more expressive as they age. Probably why Esperanto didn't catch on.
