So my brother is in 8th grade. Lately, he's been acting like a complete ass to my parents and has started skipping out of school work. He was straight A's, now he's not turning in homework and whatnot. Even worse, he is never listening to a thing his parents keep saying. I say to myself that it may be because school is almost over, but my parents are still concerned about his future, since high school is next year for him, and it's a pivotal moment of his life. Unfortunately, he thinks getting popular and hanging with the "cool kids" is more important than good grades. So tell me, you think it's just a summer phase, or do we really need to be concerned about his attitude? And if it's the latter, what can we do?

Can you talk to him about it, in a way that is not telling him what to do, but listening to how he feels and what is underneath his actions? I think that is what is needed at the moment. Something has changed, and how you deal with it depends on why his attitude has changed, so that's what you need to find out first.
