My girlfriend and I have considered having sex, and thus have been leaning towards the birth control pill. She hasn't actually started using it, but she has them, and a prescription for them. She planned on starting taking them at the beginning of her next menstrual cycle (which so happens to be next week). Now, we're not rushed or anything, but she came across an article in the paper that told of all of these side-effects of the pill. One being a greater chance of developing breast cancer. Now, this really put me off, because breast cancer runs in my girlfriends family for 3 generations before her, including her mother. On top of this, she has cystic breasts, and if any of you are familiar with cystic breasts and the chances of developing growths on them, then you know it's not a good thing. So what do we do? I don't really want to risk having her already likely chances of getting Breast cancer increased further, but I'm also not sure if these statistics are a little blown out of proportion to make a good story? Does anyone have any insight to my situation? I'd appreciate it, thanks.

The pill vs. Breast cancer?

Here is a good article about the pill and breast cancer:http://www.webmd.com/content/article/91/101127.htmBasically, they are still unsure as to whether there is an increase in breast cancer or not. It seems that the higher risk is in woman over 45 who had taken the pill before 1975 when the pill had higher levels of horomones.I would say your girlfriend should be fine especially if it was her doctor that gave her the prescription. But if she has any questions, she should ask her doctor and make sure he/she knows that there is a family history of breast cancer.
