sorry if questions sound stupid, but I am serious and a little concerned.I'm not a very violent person and I have never been in a real fight before.I "boxed" someone last night. It was pretty intense. Both wearing helmets and gloves - but still powerful blows to the head.I had a big headache following this "match" And soon after I discovered that my jaw hurt. LIke if I try to open my mouth wide it hurts - and last time I ate it hurt when I was chewing. This fight was around 11:10 PM yesterday - and this morning I still have a headache and my jaw still hurts a little. I took some tylenol.Pretty sure I didn't get a concussion (wasn't knocked out, my eyes looked fine, and I was wearing a helmet) - but I defnitely got knocked around a bit and I have a major headache. How long do you think before everything is healead and I feel better?I more details are needed, I will give them.

Big headache and jaw hurting? normal after fight?

First off, its head gear, not a helmet. Helmets serve a different function, head gear is used in boxing to lessen the impact of a given blow and do less damage in a ring where the obkject is to score points, not to knock the opponent out like in pro boxing. You can still get hurt, and gloves are to protect the wearers hands from being broken, tape is to do the smae thing and to keep anyone from tossing in a roll of quarters inside the tape to do more damage witha hit then they are normally capable of.
With the lesson over, lets talk about the rest.
You were wearing a mouth piece yes?
if it doesnt fit right, thats enough to hurt your jaw, add to that that your constantly straining biting down on it, and getting hit in the head, a sore jaw is normal. as to a concusion, that gear doesnt protect you from one, the head being snapped back and forth from side to side can give you whiplash as well as the constant pounding even through the protective gear.
As to how long before you feel better ?
How old are you, I heal alot more slowley at 35 then I did at 20, it takes me weeks to be 100% after a big fight now.
different punches do different damages, a hook to the jaw will snap that neck to teh side and create a substantial amount of force from the impact that is all transfered into the target. (the greatest % is absorbed by the target but some is released back into teh fist that struck the blow)
In addidtion to that it will loosen up that jaw. an uppercut knocks the head back and doees more damage inthe neck then in the place it lands, Upper cuts are beatiful things when thrown right and have led to many many KO's. jabs do different damage still as do crosses.
Dont ever con yourself into thinking because your wearing that gear, you wont be hurt.
I boxed for a long time and loved every minute of it. I still put the gear on and box each time Im with my brothers. Theres been alot of out blood spilt on the garage floor in the winter and on the grass in the summer, all while wearing full gear.
If you think that not being KOed is a sure sign there is no concussion, your a fool. concussions come in varring degrees as well, Iv had mild concussions and severe. a constant headache the day after is a damn good sign you got a mild one in this case.
When I have one, I always notice blue outlines around things that are backlit, and a bit of a sulfury sorta copper taste in my mouth.
At any rate, even if you have one, Iv had MANY and survived. You should be fine.
With that bit of info keep in mind that I have permenant brain damage from fighting as well. a sort of static that shows up on an eeg, and the reason Im not still getting in that ring today. I recieved a life time ban from boxing because of the shit. That was in 99, I still miss being in the ring today.
If you want to box, fine, I say do it. But dont assume because of some pads your not going to be hurt. I have had teeth knocked out in a bout, at a contest, wearing full gear, and finished a round with 3 teeth in my mouth piece. broken noses, KOed and been KOed, and more consussions than you may think a person can have in a life time.
If your going to do something be aware of the risks before you decide to carry on with doing it. -
Hmm your head and jaw hurt after boxing... hmmmm.... what a mystery :P
I hope Grvtykllr's great post put some things in perspective. Even if you don't have surface pain doesn't mean you didn't put your brain through the tumble cycle. Most boxers are forced to retire like Grvtykllr stated, due to severe brain trauma. Whether long term cases of brain damage or an aneurysm during a fight can leave you crippled or dead. Just jogging your head back and forth severely can cause your brain to swell giving you a very bad concussion.
I love boxing and my father was very good boxer but don't kid yourself into thinking its not a dangerous sport, pads or not. In fact its guaranteed to be dangerous in the worst way, head and neck trauma. Youth and muscles often make you feel invincible and rapid heal times make you believe you can go on forever. Be fully aware and of the risks and accept the facts that injuries and long term damage are not a possibility but an inevitability.

Maybe you should chose a more intelligent sporting activity while you still have a fully functional brain capable of makeing these choices?
-
The objective of boxing is to knock out your opponent by causes trauma (a concussion) to the brain. In other words the objective is to damage the brain of your opponent.Unless you never get hit in the head, which seems rather unlikely, you will suffer brain damage if you box. It is a hell of a "sport".What's funny is that there are surely boxing fans who will lecture their kids about not doing meth and such drugs, because the drugs will damage their brain. A bit ironic.

Steve ... quit repeating yourself.. Sheesh...

wow still new replies to this? i posted this early December.Sorry for not giving you all an update.Pain completeley gone now.As I recall, it lasted for about a week but was mostly gone after several days.I have not done anything like this since. And it was pretty much ALL head blows. Most of us were drunk (I had only about 2 drinks I think) and being stupid. Thanks for the great advice
-
I was responding to wildbk. You understand about the Re: thing, right? It means "in response to".
-
OK Steve.. if you look up above and quit being smug, as you have this tendency, you will notice that you posted twice and I was joking.
-
But they were both in reply to someone else. The new BB software version doesn't seem to prevent double posting like the old BB one.Today is literal day...in this thread.
-
But they were both in reply to someone else. ???? Don't understand what you are saying. Same reply to the same person....
-
Gee, I dunno, must be something in the water, or admins can do magical feats of editing their posts.
-
Still don't know wtf you are talking about. Are you implying that I changed something to make it look like you posted twice to the same person?
-
I may have misunderstood the grave importance and skimmed to fast, but it said something about replying to yourself, didn't it? Remind me to quote next time.
-
Yes please do... It said repeating not replying. You're just to quick for your own good.
-
Well then, it looks like one of us needs to take our meds today.
-
Sometimes, if you press the "submit" button twice, it will enter the post 2 times. Nothing to get upset about.
-
That's good, because I was about to throw the TV off the terrace. The owner of the car below owes you some gratitude. The old BB software would catch it if you were going to do a double post, unless the server was hung up and people kept jumping on the submit button.
