Hey hey guys. I looked through the forums for a thread on this topic and couldn't really find anything on the subject so I decided to make a post.Do you think long distance relationships can work? Once you have answered that question, do you think they can work if both of the people are in college? Now, what if the distance is a thousand miles? Keep in mind that both subjects are between the ages of 17 and 24.~Anondude

Long Distance? Can they work?

Can long distance relationships work? Yes, they can work at any distance. But the further away from each other you are, the harder it is due to the almost total lack of physical contact. And I know some people think that they don't need the physical part, that they love the other person, not just their body. But while some people can handle it (usually quite a while into the relationship, not at the start), as humans we all need a physcial connection with our partners. Now, college based long distance relationships are even harder! The presence of many young men and women, often experiencing their first years away from home together, in an environment where prior controls, supervision and discipline are to a great extent removed, and where youths are in a position to engage in adult behavior with some anticipating new activities and freedoms. This can be quite distracting and tempting for people in relationship with someone who is never present.

It concerns me that there is such a wide diversity in ages. Continuing on with the very good points made by bobalicious, the physical separation and exposure to others around your own age at college could make one grow less interested in a love back home. It's normal that one at college is mostly going to be exposed to others that same age as he/she is. That could tend to make the one at home seem less mature and he/she decides to move on with not only someone who is not only closer to his/her age, but is also physically available.

Yes, long distance relationships can work. The amount of distance doesn't really matter. My aunt and uncle were pretty much on opposite sides of the globe, but now they're married and living in the US together. They were pen pals at the start of it all. What really matters is the personalities of the two people involved. Some people can handle it as long as they are willing.

Are you talking about you (the 17-year-old guy} in a long-distance relationship with a 24-year-old woman? Have you guys ever met in real life?Anything is possible -- for a small number of people. I'd wager that the long-term prospects are not good, without at least occasional contact.

No, I am not the 17 year old guy, and she isnt the 24 year old women. I just have come across a situation like the one above and have realized that it has relevance in my life to know more about an answer to such a question.
