Once again, I'm late on the draw since I only get on here every few days.My apologies.I think the truth might lie somewhere between Krystal's assertions and Steve's assertions. I see people taking extremes. On the one hand are those who would use "freedom of speech" (whatever the hell that is) as an excuse to be an ass. Wrong. On the other hand are those who seem to believe that offending someone is the chiefest off offenses. I believe that's equally wrong. My opinion (should it matter to anyone): I believe we should preserve the right to have honest discussions about sensitive and controversial issues as long as it's benificial. I've learned a lot from such discussions. On the other hand, I think we have the obligation to always be on guard and consider what impact our words - even respectful, well-intentioned words - might have on others. That might mean making a thoughtful decision round whether or not the benifit of saying the words outweigh the possible harm in saying them. Or at least it means being careful how we say them.Of course calling people names never falls under the category of helpful or justifiable (despite the fact that I just did that on here a few days ago. My apologies.)

It occurred to me on re-reading this that it looks like I was saying Krystal and Steve represent those extremes. I don't believe that at all. I just meant they were both making reasonable assertions that are often taken to harmful extremes.
